The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has forecasted that $128 billion in capital expenditure annually is required if the aviation industry wants to reach net-zero emissions by the end of 2050. This prediction was released at the recent World Sustainability Symposium in Miami on September 24, where industry leaders gathered to set guidelines for achieving net-zero CO2 emissions by 2050 through new tech and sustainable aviation fuel. The symposium focused predominantly on decarbonization, innovation, policy, and finance in the aviation industry. #IATA #aviation #airlines #renewableenergy #aviationfuel #fuel #energy #sustainability

How will Power2X and Advario's latest partnership shape the future of sustainable aviation fuel? Power2X and Advario have announced plans to establish a production and storage hub for sustainable aviation fuel (e-SAF) and synthetic, ultra-low carbon fuels at the Port of Rotterdam. Power2X’s facility will produce over 250,000 tonnes of e-SAF annually from green hydrogen, marking the largest e-SAF facility announced to date. Occo Roelofsen, CEO of Power2X, highlights the project’s ambition to drive global-scale e-SAF production in Europe’s heart, aligning with the company’s commitment to decarbonization. Advario will develop advanced storage and logistics facilities with a 230,000-cubic-meter capacity, utilizing marine and rail links for distribution across European airports, including Amsterdam Airport Schiphol. This hub will play a critical role in meeting Europe’s ReFuelEU Aviation Regulation, which mandates increased e-SAF use starting in 2030. Advario CEO Bas Verkooijen underscores the partnership’s role in accelerating the energy transition. Could this collaboration set a new standard for e-SAF production and storage in Europe? This week Airlines UK organised a net zero aviation seminar, hosted by associate member Bird & Bird in London and supported by Gold member ICF. The session focussed on the critical issue of feedstocks, and whether enough is being done to ensure aviation has access to the SAF, hydrogen and renewable energy we’ll need to make net zero a reality. Speakers from SAF producer alfanar, British Airways, ICF and the RISE coalition provided real-world insights into the current state of play on SAF, with the UK clearly having a huge opportunity to be a world leader in creating advanced SAFs given the volumes of feedstocks we have available, from municipal solid waste to woody biomass and, in future, carbon and hydrogen from new green industrial clusters. However, the ability of aviation to access these feedstocks remains a priority and clearly must be a focus for the next Government, given the hurdles that projects still face today to reach FID. Also covered was the UK's hydrogen and energy needs to support zero emission aviation, with Airbus and ZeroAvia updating on the exciting projects happening today and the steps necessary to make the UK ready for hydrogen-powered air travel at scale. Sector trade body Hydrogen UK provided valuable insights into how aviation is likely to impact the UK’s hydrogen sector and production plans, and it's clear that all of aviation will need to speak with one voice to Government to ensure we have enough renewable energy to power the transition; to make green hydrogen, synthetic future SAFs and to enable commercial carbon capture. Many thanks to all our speakers and to my AuK colleague Rob Griggs for moderating. #airlines #airports #aviation #aerospace #travel #tourism #netzero Matthew Gorman Jonathon Counsell Rachel Gardner-Poole Andy Jefferson PhD, BSc (Hons) Jane Thompson Alastair Blanshard Noaman Al Adhami Leigh Hudson Adam Bell Cathy Mussert Angus Boobbyer Kirsty Buchanan OBE Katie Roscoe Oriel Petry FRAeS James McMicking Dr Rannia Leontaridi OBE David Silk Holly Greig Joe Delafield Natasha Robinson Claire Swadkin Debbie Stockwell

✈️ Paving the Way for Sustainable Aviation with #ICARUS! The ICARUS consortium has identified key technology barriers hindering the wider deployment of three critical Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) production routes: 🔹 Biocrude from hydrothermal liquefaction 🔹 Isobutanol from lignocellulosic biomass 🔹 Synthetic Fischer-Tropsch from biomass gasification These value chains are strategically chosen for their proximity to market deployment and their importance in achieving European and international SAF targets. 🚀 💡 What’s ICARUS doing? ✅ Developing innovative solutions to improve SAF production ✅ Addressing the entire value chain for sustainability ✅ Introducing novel biomass production concepts like sequential and mix cropping for sustainable feedstock availability ✅ Conducting comprehensive techno-economic, environmental, and social assessments The project aims to significantly improve the cost-effectiveness of SAF and accelerate its global market deployment. 🛫 The aviation industry's growth plans and Europe's climate goals are on a collision course. Here's a practical demonstration of the rebound effect (Jevons Paradox): despite improvements in efficiency, the aviation sector is projected to burn 59% more fuel by 2050. This paradox occurs when we focus solely on efficiency and alternative fuels without planning for an actual phase-out of emissions at their deep roots. Let me break this down: The industry claims it can achieve net zero through technological innovation and sustainable aviation fuels (SAFs). However, the math doesn't add up. Even with these measures, emissions will continue to soar due to unprecedented growth in air traffic. This is a classic case of trying to solve a systemic problem with technical solutions alone. Real climate action requires addressing the root cause: unsustainable growth in air travel. ‼T&E's key requests to EU policymakers: - Stop airport expansion and new airport construction - End tax exemptions for aviation fuel and introduce effective carbon pricing - Set binding targets to deploy sustainable aviation fuels (SAFs) - Implement measures to reduce corporate travel and shift short-haul flights to rail - Ensure transparency in aviation's climate impact reporting What's your take on this? Should we prioritize reducing flights over betting on future technological solutions? #ClimateAction #Aviation #Sustainability #ClimatePolicy #NetZero https://lnkd.in/ds5HPFcf
