What a CPHI this year in Milan. 40+ meetings held from the team is an effort physically and mentally but definitely a great achievement with a tremendous ROI! I smile when our peers (sometime also colleagues) think about Procurement as just ‘price, price, price’. Nothing more wrong. It is definitely more than that and really about creating the right network, nurturing relationships with suppliers, building trust and credibility, sharing the same values, moving from tactical to strategic, looking with a long sight and seeking for a win/win model. But this takes time, patience and a high degree of motivation from all parties and this is what makes two Companies which are dealing becoming resilient and establishing a long term partnership. Then I can tell you that nothing will be more easy than talk about ‘just prices’.

CPHI Milan 2024, a leading global pharmaceutical event, was held at Fiera Milano, Italy, earlier this month, bringing together suppliers, innovators, and industry experts to foster connections and partnerships within the global pharmaceutical community. Our Senior Managing Director, Shiraz Bugwadia, and our Managing Director, Prasanna Bora, attended the event and have following industry insights to share: 𝐂𝐑𝐎: Most Indian CROs have experienced growth plateauing, are facing challenges in scaling up operations outside of India as global clients are looking for partners that can offer comprehensive services and global clinical trials. 𝐂𝐃𝐌𝐎: Indian CDMOs are behind the curve as compared to global players in biologics manufacturing capabilities and hence, are keen to acquire these capabilities, specifically in CGT, ADCs. 𝐀𝐏𝐈: While China +1, the Biosecure Act, and PLI schemes offer some tailwinds, future growth would be driven by differentiated product capabilities in areas such as peptides, fermentation, etc. 𝐓𝐫𝐚𝐝𝐞 𝐆𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐬: Indian CMOs are either closely evaluating TGx or have already initiated TGx businesses as they have an inherent advantage with in-house manufacturing 𝐄𝐱𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭 𝐅𝐨𝐫𝐦𝐮𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬: 1) 𝐔𝐒 𝐆𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐬: Remains highly relevant, accounting for half the global market. However, more suited for companies with balance sheet strength and/or niche capabilities. Mid-sized companies are expected to more susceptible to pricing pressures and competition. 2) 𝐄𝐦𝐞𝐫𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐌𝐚𝐫𝐤𝐞𝐭𝐬 𝐆𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐬: A few upcoming Indian pharma companies have grown rapidly due to their focus on emerging markets. However, with limited barriers to entry, competition and margin pressures are expected to increase. We look forward to our continued participation and engagement at CPHI.
