Interesting and relevant topic. I feel like when a technology is new, we want to name/describe it in the way that makes the most scientific and practical sense for the people that will use the technology. We pay for this naming system later when you have to defend a product that people eat being branded with the same cold scientific jargon: "Genetically modified Organism" and "Genetically-Engineered" - I can kind of understand why having these terms applied to your food isn't exactly appetizing, even if that doesn't reflect safety or quality. And of course the benefit of new friendly-sounding labeling negatively impacts the incumbent product. If one product can be labeled as "Organic" does that make the other product "non-Organic"? What does that really mean? If a can of tuna is "dolphin-friendly", are all other cans without that label "not friendly to dolphins"? Maybe, I don't know. I don't know much about the labeling process of tuna but I do prefer to buy the cans with the dolphin friendly label - just to be safe. I don't really have time to be an expert on everything, so I buy the product I 'feel' best about at point of purchase. Labeling is often a big part of that feeling. We need to remember that this is how the typical consumer functions. They are not an expert in your product, do they 'feel' good about buying it? How can we improve our language to better align the great quality and safety of a product with the good feeling we want people to have buying it?
In agriculture, the words we use carry weight. It's time to reevaluate terms like 'genetic engineering' and 'corporate farm' to ensure they accurately represent the advancements and realities of modern farming. By choosing language that fosters understanding and respect, we can better communicate the value and innovation within our industry. How we tell our story and the words we use need to reflect the precision, sustainability, and professionalism in agriculture today. I get into this over on my blog. Are there any additional words that you'd put on the list? https://loom.ly/rFvfTKU #CdnAg #Agribusiness
