This week, the Texas McCombs Investment Advisers, LLC, hosted Matt Dennis, Portfolio Manager at S5 Capital, who came to teach us about what makes a good stock pitch! He came to sit in on the students' first round of flash pitches and gave us valuable insight into how to improve and structure moving forward. Specifically, Matt shared the four questions that you must answer in your pitch: 1. How much can I make? Returns are the most important aspect to investors. 2. How much can I lose? (Base, Bear and Bull Cases) 3. Is the story already priced into the shares? 4. What are the catalysts? Big thank you to Matt for visiting us at the Texas McCombs School of Business! Your insight was incredibly valuable.

Sunday reflections on retailification of private assets PART 3 Who is the CIO? The LT in ELTIF means Long Term. Institutional investors have since many decades, invested in Long Term locked up assets, which will now be made available to smaller, less experienced and less well informed investors. The institutional investors have built up whole departments and functions with expertise, whose job it is to find, analyse, negotiate with and supervise investments in low-liquidity, long-term, potentially higher return investments. Why? Why did they not just invest in a diversified fund of eg Private Equity funds and enjoy the better returns? Because diversification doesn’t work like it does in listed securities. The good investments with the 20% worth-while GPs are difficult to find and get into. It takes time and effort and a deep understanding. The less good ones are open for investors always. For a condensed lesson of how one of the probably most popular assets for retailification, Private Equity, actually works, see the excellent Professor Steven Kaplan’s lecture below. Spoiler; Picking good investments is hard and bad choices will haunt the investor for a long time. https://lnkd.in/dijCShzd That picking of good investments is hard is further supported by the equally excellent Professor Josh Lerner of Harvard and his 2005 paper on which investors actually succeed. Spoiler; They are few and far between. As an industry, we need to critically ask ourselves if the Tinder model, ie acting primarily as matchmaker and facilitator, between capital hungry illiquid investments and uninformed investors, who are new to this universe and unaware of its’ technical aspects, such as capital calls, is the best way forward, if it is a good business model. It goes against all that institutional experience suggests. Could it lead to the investors putting money with the 80% that are no better, and in some cases much worse, than investing in listed equities through a liquid UCITS fund? So the question remains; Who is the CIO? If we let excessive enthusiasm overtake a more “prudent man” approach and ignore what investors best interests are, by letting them learn-by-doing without any guidance, there will be blood!
