Did you know that the glass boxes of this façade are entirely bonded using structural silicone? This highly transparent façade at the P.C. Hooftstraat 138 – designed by UNStudio – in Amsterdam features complex, curved elements with detailed glass connections and bespoke non-orthogonal steel and glass doors. The boxes start flush with the adjacent buildings and cantilever 250 mm outward while curving upward. Slender stainless steel elements wrap around the glass, provide edge protection and emphasise the curved geometry. The combination of the curved shapes in stainless steel, glass and the silicone bonding had to be perfect. Therefore, all came down to the exact millimetres - from the silicone bonding to the glass and steel joints, the steel frame and on-site installation. We did extensive iterative calculations to ensure that the structural silicone can accommodate the high tensile stresses as the glass cantilevers outwards, the tolerances in temperature differences and tolerances between the curved glass and the stainless steel (about 2 mm in all directions). The result is architectural and structural engineering masterpiece.
