🧠 Glasgow Coma Scale: Master the Basics The GCS is a widely used scoring system to assess the level of consciousness in patients with traumatic brain injury, stroke, or other neurological conditions. It consists of three components: 1. Eye Opening (E): Ranges from 1 (no eye opening) to 4 (spontaneous eye opening). 2. Verbal Response (V): Ranges from 1 (no verbal response) to 5 (oriented and converses). 3. Motor Response (M): Ranges from 1 (no motor response) to 6 (obeys commands). The GCS score is obtained by adding the scores of these three components (E + V + M) and ranges from 3 (deep coma or death) to 15 (fully awake and oriented). By evaluating the GCS score, Neurology residents can quickly assess a patient's neurological status, monitor their progress, and guide clinical decision-making. Remember to practice and stay confident in your GCS assessment skills, as they are crucial in managing patients with neurological conditions. 🏈🧠 In a recent press release, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) announced the results of a study funded by the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS), noting high rates of chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) in young athletes who died before 30 years old. The study, published in JAMA Neurology, analyzed the brains of 152 deceased athletes who died before 30 years old.
