Although early detection of breast cancer through mammograms—an X-ray scan—is vital for improved treatment outcomes, false-positive results, which do not lead to a cancer diagnosis, may discourage women from undergoing future screenings, a study suggests. Researchers from the University of California, Davis in the US said that abnormal findings on mammograms can lead to women being recalled for additional imaging and biopsies, many of which turn out to be false positives. Early detection can dramatically change the outlook of a breast cancer diagnosis. That's why the USPSTF recommends that women 40-74 years old, at *average risk* for breast cancer, get a mammogram every two years. The challenge? Knowing whether a patient has an average or elevated risk of developing invasive breast cancer. Higher-risk patients may benefit from more regular screening. Recent advancements in risk assessment, such as geneType’s comprehensive test, go far beyond family history to understand who is high-risk, helping spark conversations that can guide more personalized care.
