Children's Ground is a First Nations organisation we are fortunate enough to have use Raisely. The Children’s Ground Approach is a 25-year strategy. They are implementing a system that recognises and privileges First Nations governance, solutions and systems of knowledge. At this time of year, many people pause to reflect on the true meaning of philanthropy, asking themselves: What is the best way to give? To whom should I give? And, perhaps most importantly, why should I give? Fifteen years ago, I published Dead Aid: Why Aid Is Not Working and How There Is a Better Way for Africa. I argued that government-to-government aid, rather than fueling economic growth, inadvertently harms the very countries it is meant to help. Since then, philanthropists have often sought my advice about their desire to grapple with seemingly intractable challenges, such as extreme poverty or climate change. We are pleased to share that Pamir Canadian Multiculturalism Council executives recently attended the Community's Networking Reception and Annual celebration, hosted by the Calgary Foundation. In 2023, the Calgary Foundation generously donated over $75 million to support more than 1,200 organizations in Calgary, significantly impacting our city. During the recent Vital Cities event in 2024, they presented some notable statistics from their Quality of Life report: - Despite Calgary being ranked highly as one of the most livable cities globally, 47% of Albertans are just $200 away from financial instability. - 46% of individuals are reducing their intake of fruits and vegetables, while 29% are worried about food shortages. - A concerning 78% of Calgarians do not feel secure walking alone downtown after dark. These figures highlight the continuous challenges we are encountering and stress the crucial role that community-focused organizations like the Calgary Foundation play in driving positive change. It is also a day to acknowledge the truth about our collective history. I encourage everyone to take time today to learn about the Indigenous history of the places where you live, work, and play. Consider donating your time or money to an Indigenous-led organization, and familiarize yourself with the 10 Guiding Principles of Reconciliation from the Truth and Reconciliation Commission Report.
