Maximize data center cooling efficiency by controlling airflow Maintaining the separation of hot and cool air is crucial in maximizing the cooling effectiveness, energy efficiency, and performance of air conditioners in data centers. While there is a growing trend towards liquid cooling, air remains the primary method of cooling in most data centers. The key objectives in effective air cooling are to ensure maximum air delivery to the IT equipment and to keep the hot air discharged from the IT equipment separate from the cool air that enters. Different data centers may employ various types of cooling methods, making it essential for administrators to understand these methods and the significance of controlling return air to optimize cooling efficiency. There are two main classifications of air-cooling methods: bypass air and recirculated air. Bypass air involves directing cooled air past the IT equipment instead of through it, which can result in a mixture of cool and hot discharge air. This mixture lowers the temperature of the air that returns to the air conditioners, thereby reducing the cooling capacity. On the other hand, recirculated air involves the hot air discharged from the IT equipment returning to the front and mixing with the cooled supply air. This can raise the temperature of the air entering the IT equipment, leading to a decrease in cooling efficiency and potentially shortening the service life of the IT equipment. By enclosing the IT equipment discharge air, the rest of the room can be maintained at the supply air temperature. However, this method does utilize some cooling air for the rest of the room. Alternatively, enclosing the IT equipment supply air can leave the rest of the room at hot aisle temperature, maximizing the usage of cool air if the air balance is properly managed. Overall, understanding the different types of air-cooling methods and their implications on cooling efficiency is vital for data center administrators to ensure optimal performance and energy efficiency of the air conditioning systems.
