Last week, Director McKenzie Snow and Bureau Chief Betsy Lin toured the ChildServe facilities in Johnston. They met with ChildServe’s CEO Teri Wahlig, Senior Vice President Tracy Page and Vice Presidents Mikki Stier and Leslie Rogers to hear more about their medical and therapy services, which support over 5,600 children with special healthcare needs statewide. On the tour, Director Snow was able to see different areas of the facility that provide pediatric rehabilitation, mental health services and autism and behavioral supports. ChildServe provides services in five locations across the state and serves 76 of Iowa’s 99 counties.

$100 million to build a prison with 30 beds for "high risk" juveniles in WA. I wonder how much they are spending on prevention? Such as identifying children suffering from prenatal alcohol exposure and early childhood trauma? Such as offering preschool children support and therapy rather than exclusion from daycare and preschool? Such as assessing children in kindergarten for ADHD, intellectual disability, autism, and/or FASD? Such as providing play therapy for all young children suspected of having experienced trauma? See preventionnotdetention.com ... videos starting to go up.

Our very own Dr. Douglas Halbert visits the ABC7 studio to discuss how regular pediatric visits can offer clues about a child’s developmental health and whether they are developing as expected.
