This year marks the 15th anniversary of National School Choice Week! It’s a time to celebrate the power of educational freedom and the opportunities school choice brings to Iowa’s families. School choice empowers families to find the learning environment that fits their child’s learning style, interests and talents, whether it’s: - a neighborhood public school, - open enrollment to a public school outside a family’s resident district, - an innovative public charter school, - accredited nonpublic school, or - homeschool. In Iowa, every family in Iowa is empowered to choose the education option that best meets their child’s unique needs and prepares them for bright futures. #SchoolChoice #NSCW2025 #ChooseYourPathwayIA

#SchoolChoiceWeek Controversial, I know, but let's look at this as an opportunity to #ElevateAdultEducation. School choice includes "options available to students and families, including traditional public schools, public charters, public magnet schools, online options, private schools, and a wealth of homeschool options." For our youth 16+, is not #AdultEducation an option? Let's look at more. "School choice empowers parents and guardians to pursue the best learning environment for their children. It allows for innovative schooling models and methods that meet the unique needs of students across the nation. Education freedom ensures that a child’s opportunity to access a high-quality education and pursue the American Dream is not determined by his or her zip code." I find a lot to leverage here, my friends. We have to look at what we can work with. Promoting #AdultEducation as a choice aligns with a lane we can maneuver, if we do so strategically. When I was director of EastSide University - ESUVCLC, I took this exact approach. Now that we in a new era of education, let's continue to find way to navigate it. Our learners are depending on us to do so. #MoveAheadWithAdultEd #AdultLiteracyMatters #Advocacy

This Denver microschool is working to show what public education could look like. La Luz was founded in 2020 by Kyle Gamba, a former public school educator, who saw high levels of disengagement from students, despite teachers’ best efforts, and believed there was a better way. La Luz is tuition-free, supported by grants, and serves the same population of students, while spending the same amount per student, as their local public schools. But instead of spending all day in a classroom, students are learning in the community. The 40 students in the school spend each morning receiving two hours of traditional academic instruction in classrooms rented from Denver Public Schools before spending the rest of the day in experiential learning. On Mondays, this tends to mean learning in nature at a nearby park, under the instruction of La Luz teachers, who are referred to as guides. The rest of the week is spent learning on site with a community partner, an experience that rotates every three to six weeks. Past rotations have included History Colorado, Denver Parks and Recreation, and CSU Spur, as well as the Denver Zoo. At each site, students are learning under the direction of La Luz guides, with support from the on-site organization. Here’s a look at what one educator believes public school could be. #K12 #Schools #Education #Microschools

It may be #backtoschool season, but we know preparing for #summerlearning begins now! Led by the nonprofit FHI 360, the Wallace-funded DSLN has helped more than 100 districts across six states design, carry out, and sustain high-quality, evidence-based summer learning programs that prepare students for academic success and support their well-being. A research team at NYU Metro Center is studying the effort. The team is producing a series of “Summer Snapshots” to highlight how districts across the country are reimagining what a summer program can be. This first summer snapshot focuses on high school students faced with making up class credits over the summer. It examines how two school districts, Manchester Public School District, in Connecticut, and Oakland Unified School District, in California, have reinvented their programs to take a more holistic approach to academics and enrichment over the summer. They are moving beyond credit makeup to accelerate learning and better prepare students for the upcoming year.
