As the Michigan House of Representatives has adjourned for the year, we are left reflecting on the stark gap between what could have been and what was delivered. Despite the clear need for desperate action on these critical issues affecting our state, enough legislators chose to prioritize ego, political gamesmanship, and obstruction over the well-being and dignity of the people they are sworn to serve. These lawmakers allowed personal pride and petty politics to derail progress. Michiganders—our families, our neighbors, the most vulnerable in our communities—are the ones who bear the burden of this inaction. This failure to pass essential legislation is not just a failure of governance; it is a betrayal to Michiganders who count on their leaders to protect their rights, their safety, and their future. At the ACLU, we believe in justice and equality for all, and we will not be silent as partisan politics tramples the rights and needs of the people of Michigan. We remain steadfast in our commitment to defending and preserving the rights and liberties that the Constitution guarantees to everyone—whatever the future may bring. This National Partnership for Child Safety convening is a genuine milestone in the application of safety science to child protection. Moving away from a knee-jerk “blame game” response when critical incidents occur, safety science offers an evidence-based way to identify the factors that influence child protective decision-making, with the goal of preventing future child fatalities and serious injuries. It shifts the focus to system improvements that will have a greater long-term impact on saving lives. https://lnkd.in/eDhqWu-y

UPDATE for our friends celebrating Rosh Hashanah: This webinar will be recorded! Or maybe you're worried people won't listen? You're not alone! We hear these fears from folks all the time. And we also know the worst thing we can do is NOT talk about race. Having thoughtful, strategic conversations about race and racism is the ONLY way for us to overcome the deep-seated biases embedded in our national psyche and start building support for the repair and healing we must do to get to a more just world. And we CAN do it! Join us this Thursday for a FREE webinar to learn more about Dr. Tiffany Manuel's framework for navigating the critical conversations we must have both inside and outside our coalitions to get closer to justice. Next week, I will be joining a panel of professionals at the Winter Seminar by Ohio Council of Port Authorities. We will be discussing the growing pains that many Ohio communities are facing right now, including Tuscarawas County. Ohio is experiencing tremendous amounts of development in many different sectors. This makes for interesting times to be in economic development. I think the first thing we need to acknowledge, is that these problems are good ones to have. I'd rather be complaining about not having enough houses, or enough people, than complaining about having too many houses, or too many people with no opportunities. However, growth-related pressures, while positive in origin, still require solutions. So, I am excited to join this discussion and advocate for strategies that address these growing pains.
