Today at the Iowa State Capitol, we were honored to host our Veterans for Voting Award ceremony during Veterans Day on the Hill. These remarkable individuals and organizations have gone above and beyond – not only did they make the ultimate sacrifice fighting for our country, but they've also dedicated their time to ensuring veterans' voices are heard at the polls across Iowa. Thank you to all our recipients for your selflessness, service, and sacrifice. I am proud to work alongside such dedicated patriots who continue to strengthen our democracy even after their military service.

While the words being said are encouraging, the real question remains: will this ever come to fruition, or is this yet another false promise like we've seen countless times before with defence infrastructure? For years, promises of improvements have been made, yet many military families still live in unacceptable conditions. In 2022 alone, 40% of military homes failed to meet the Decent Homes Standard, and complaints about mould, damp, and disrepair remain rampant. The government's £1.6bn pledged investment in improving homes in the Defence Estate hasn't yet translated to visible change on the ground. Our Armed Forces and their families deserve more than words — they deserve action. Let's see if this 'landmark deal' will truly deliver, or if history will repeat itself.
"You're ready to make sacrifices to keep the rest of us safe, the least you deserve is a decent home for you and your families." Secretary of State for Defence John Healy visited RAF Northolt today to see the dire state of military homes at the base. Our landmark deal will bring the Armed Forces estate back into public ownership, ensuring homes are fit for our heroes. Read more about it here: https://ow.ly/H5tj50UsKSZ

This issue is long overdue for resolution, and calling it an oversight would be an understatement. The condition of military accommodation, whether on-base housing or marriage patches, is nothing short of disgraceful. It reflects poorly on the military and government, who bear the responsibility to ensure the well-being of those who serve. Our service personnel and their families deserve safe, well-maintained living conditions that reflect the value of their commitment and sacrifice. Instead, they are often left to endure substandard accommodation that fails to meet acceptable standards. This is not merely an administrative failing; it is a moral obligation that has been neglected for far too long. The lack of meaningful action on this issue demonstrates a failure to prioritise the needs of those who protect and serve the nation. It is time for the government and military leadership to take responsibility, implement immediate improvements, and ensure no family is forced to live in such unacceptable conditions again.

While repairs and rebuilding won’t happen overnight, is there scope to look into why many military families are facing an increase in pricing due to the recent CAAS band increase? Many homes are in complete disrepair, covered in mould and local amenities can’t be maintained such as parks so they have been padlocked shut. All seemingly because there is better broadband in the area? While this seems a step in the right direction, many families won’t see this improvement in their careers, more should be done to help those families in the present tense. Thoughts?
