I attended the Bar Association of San Francisco program "Fearless Female Founders: How Women Lead and Market" with a panel of successful law firm leaders and solo entrepreneurs. Takeaway: women retain women, all things being equal. Generalizing: women lawyers don't always bring the same unconscious biases to the table that men sometimes do. Experts: consider WBENC Certification. An attorney on the panel does and values it, as she should. This is the Women's Business Enterprise Council which documents woman-owned businesses for government contracts and other purposes. It is the gold standard for this purpose. It's my fault they increased the number of female speakers by 77% in less than 6 months... You see, I had the pleasure of speaking on the "Getting Started in M&A" panel at M&A Launchpad's inaugural event in May this year. I got to meet other amazing women in the space - like Brittany Winner & Jess Bailey - while dragging Lauren Hazel along for the ride because she's got the knowledge when it comes to government contracts in small business. It was such a great time - but I noticed that there were only 6 female speakers out of 26 total speakers. In contrast with other events in the space, even this is impressive. But what stood out for me were the conversations I had with Ben Suttles before the event started & with Casey Minshew as the event was wrapping up. They were both very supportive of getting more women in the space. So when I was invited to speak at their event coming up this weekend in Chicago, I jumped at the chance...and had a question: If I could put together a panel of brilliant ladies to talk about ways that adding women into the mix can be a HUGE advantage in ETA, would they be interested in that? They said yes!! Here's why I'm so stoked about this: I believe women are particularly suited to thriving in ETA due to the way they value community and relationship-based business practices. The market has been shifting in that direction for a while now and will continue as a giant portion of that "silver tsunami" gets transferred to women over the next couple of decades. The transactional approach that has worked up to this point is becoming less effective by the day. Women know how to overcome that challenge. Women like Sarah Jansen - who has 2 successful exits and now is a power connector helping businesses find the resources they need to do better business through collaboration. Or Brittany Winner - who helps brand new LLCs build massive amounts of corporate credit that is only connected to the business EIN - NOT the owner's personal SSN. The leverage she helps create can be used as capital to cover due diligence costs and/or the down payment for the acquisition. Or Della Kirkman, CPA - who has acquired and exited a CPA firm. She's now helping more women acquire smaller businesses and working on several roll ups in various industries. Or Lauren Hazel - who is the woman you need to talk to if you're thinking about acquiring a business that already has government contracts or may be eligible to get government contracts as a woman-owned, minority-owned, and/or veteran-owned small business. Or me - who is enabling women to step into their full ambition & autonomy through acquisitions by connecting the companies I help with value acceleration and exit planning to their ideal buyers. I'm also pursuing my own roll up strategy in multiple verticals where women are drastically underrepresented. Women represent 40% of the speakers at the event this weekend. We thought if we hold one of our 2024 Cross-party Groups on Women in Enterprise at the Scottish Parliament (rather than on Zoom), then the one in May would be the best option. The warmer and brighter evenings would make it easier and more pleasant for participants to come along to the parliament building in person. That was the plan....but yesterday evening, the weather thought differently! 🌧 ☔ That's why we are delighted that we had such a great turn out and a full committee room table for our discussion on Intellectual Property yesterday, despite the heavy rain. Thank you to our presenters Alison Grieve, Rachel Jones, and Lynne Cadenhead for your insightful words around the experience and reality of IP and protection for businesses. Thanks too for the detailed input from Dr. Claudia M. Duffy. We heard about: - the need for advice from those who really understand what is required to protect a business - the costs that can be very high, but without some protection the risk is potentially even higher - the fact that for sectors where women are more typically in business the IP is in trademarks, copyright, data etc., rather than patents - the focus is on Tech and Science sector businesses and patents which are majority led and owned by men - the majority of investment goes to patent-rich businesses typically founded by men - how the value of the IP in a business is often not understood or valued, especially in those sectors with higher levels of women founders. There is a need for advice that is relevant for women's businesses. It's important to understand that there is value in types of IP other than patents. The costs of IP protection is a key issue.
