Happy Labor Day! 🇺🇸 Let's take a trip back in time to 1882, when the first Labor Day was celebrated in New York City. Imagine the scene: a bustling metropolis with horse-drawn carriages and cobblestone streets. The Central Labor Union, a group of workers advocating for their rights, organized a grand parade to honor the contributions of laborers. The picture might be in black and white, but the very first parade was a colorful spectacle that featured marching bands, banners, and workers from various trades. It was a powerful display of unity and solidarity, a testament to the strength of the labor movement. This historic event marked the beginning of a tradition that would eventually become a national holiday, recognizing the hard work and dedication of American workers. #IPCOMM #Laborday #History

"As we honor the labor movement’s achievements, let us also celebrate the resilience, strength, and leadership of African Americans who have shaped the course of labor history in the United States. Their stories remind us that the fight for justice and equality is ongoing and that every worker deserves to be treated with dignity and respect." Excellent piece on the importance of #LaborDay and honoring the legacy of those who fought, and continue to fight, for justice and equality in our society via Waymaker Journal: https://lnkd.in/eczc-VV7

I recently read "My Life and Work" by Henry Ford. Probably the best book I've read this year, aside from my beloved repeat Atlas, though Francisco's money speech could easily have been based on it. IYKYK, so I digress... Along with some of my favorite shareable quotes, there is also an interesting glimpse into his evaluation of the potential for electric vehicles, which considering the time, is altogether quite insightful. Hopefully these inspire you as you celebrate Labor Day today: ·The moment one gets into the "expert" state of mind a great number of things become impossible. I refuse to recognize that there are impossibilities. I cannot discover that anyone knows enough about anything on this earth definitely to say what is and what is not possible. ·The natural thing to do is to work—to recognize that prosperity and happiness can be obtained only through honest effort. ·Now a business, in my way of thinking, is not a machine. It is a collection of people who are brought together to do work and not to write letters to one another. ·Be not bound by the present, but leave nothing to luck. ·A man ought to be able to live on a scale commensurate with the service that he renders. ·Put brains into the method, and more brains, and still more brains—do things better than ever before; and by this means all parties to business are served and benefited. ·There is no disgrace in honest failure; there is disgrace in fearing to fail.

The first celebrated US Labor Day was on Tuesday, September 5, 1882 in New York City, planned by the Central Labor Union. 10,000 workers marched from City Hall all the way to 42nd Street and then met with their families in Wendel's Elm Park for a picnic, concert, and speeches. 2. Oregon was the first state to celebrate Labor Day as a legal holiday in 1887. 3. The decision to make Labor Day the first Monday of September was approved on June 28, 1894. 4. Labor Day started as a part of the labor union movement, to recognize the contributions of men and women in the US workforce, but modernly is seen as a chance to celebrate the last weekend of summer. 5. Historians say the expression "no white after Labor Day" comes from when the upper class would return from their summer vacations and stow away their lightweight, white summer clothes as they returned back to school and work. #LaborDay #AmericanWorkers #AmericanWorkforce #Workforce #Workers #CelebratingYou

Happy Labor Day for those celebrating in the US. Want to learn more about the strategies and tactics unions have taken around the world to stand up for democracy? Both in the United States and abroad, there is a rich tradition of civil and social action that has protected, defended, and advanced democracy. Ordinary people have shown extraordinary creativity, courage, and commitment in maintaining the freedoms they hold dear. Check out the cases Horizons has compiled from that vast and growing tradition. It is organized around two basic principles: pro-democracy action comes from diverse kinds of people and it employs diverse tactics. Unions are one important “pillar” - and in the attached table, we show the intersections of five social groups (which we refer to as pillars of support) with six tactics of action. 🔗 in comments
