I spent a wonderful day in Portsmouth yesterday facilitating an away day for the team, volunteers and advisory board members of Healthwatch Portsmouth. Thanks to Sunitha Rajeev for the invite it was wonderful to meet you and the team and hear about the fantastic work you to on behalf of the residents in Portsmouth. It turns out that using Lego for some team building can provide a fair few lessons about working collaboratively.. we learnt/were reminded that it's important to... 1. Align your team strengths with the work at hand 2. It's ok to step away if your skills don't suit a task...but...make sure you let your team know 3. The operating conditions are never perfect 4. Inclusion always matters 5. Communication is vital... 6. Empathy for others can make the difference between success or failure 7. Things are never as easy as they first appear! 8. Asking for help from your team is always ok 9. Taking time to connect as a team is vital to delivering awesome work. 10. We're blessed to work on a variety of exciting projects - from smaller brand initiatives to high-end development applications. Often, we start with small projects that grow into bigger opportunities. This growth usually comes from our approach: serving our clients' needs rather than pushing our own agenda. A couple of years ago, we created a custom March Madness bracket for Great American Family, allowing their viewers to vote on their favorite Christmas movies. It was a fun project that ran alongside the basketball frenzy. But it didn't end there. We've consistently partnered with them on various projects since. This week, our team Ardent Creative Inc proudly launched the Christmas Event site for Great American Family. It's a testament to how small beginnings can lead to significant, ongoing collaborations. 🌟 Lessons from Managing a Small Local Museum 🌟 As the sole member of staff at Congleton Museum, I wear many hats—curator, manager, marketer, event planner, and community liaison. It’s a rewarding challenge, and through my journey, I’ve learned a few key lessons that I believe could be valuable to anyone working in small teams or managing community-driven projects: Community is Everything 🤝 Small museums like ours thrive on community involvement. Local volunteers, partnerships with schools, and collaborations with heritage groups have all been vital to keeping Congleton's rich history alive. Don’t be afraid to reach out and build those local connections—they make a world of difference! One of our recent successful collabs has been with Congleton Bath House and Physic Garden, I'm excited to work with them again next Easter. Creativity Stretches Resources 🎨 Working with a limited budget has taught me to be resourceful. Whether it’s reimagining existing exhibits with a fresh perspective or leveraging social media to boost engagement, thinking outside the box can unlock hidden potential. Remember to find local businesses to help build your vision, they can sometimes be cheaper and offer a better service than the big bosses. Stay Adaptable 📈 No two days are the same when you’re the only staff member. Flexibility is key—one moment you’re updating the website, and the next, you’re guiding a school group through an exhibit, or through town in my case! Embrace the variety and use it as an opportunity to grow different skill sets and work with diverse communities. Celebrate Small Wins 🎉 In smaller operations, progress can feel slow at times. But every event, new exhibit, or successful partnership is a win worth celebrating. Those moments of success build momentum and keep the passion alive.
