YES! Hand-held lasers for welding, cleaning and marking are convenient and flexible tools, but the safety requirements are serious. Eye injuries do happen if you don't ALWAYS follow the rules, and the result can be permanent vision loss. It could be the operator if they don't wear the proper PPE, or it could be anyone else within sight of the process, if the proper guarding is not in place. And the eye damage is not like looking at a MIG arc and getting that sand-in-the-eyes feeling for a day and then it heals. Eye damage from 1 um (fiber, disk and YAG) lasers happens on the retina at the back of the eyeball, where the rod and cone photo-receptor cells get burned and die, and they never grow back. The result is a permanent loss of vision. Be smart. Use the proper PPE for yourself and guarding to protect those around you. As your mother said, "It's all fun and games until someone loses an eye."
