#NetZeroLiving2024: Engaging the Public on the Road to Net Zero NEW Ipsos report, conducted in partnership with The Centre for Climate Change and Social Transformations (CAST) explores public perceptions to net zero in the UK, providing valuable insights for policy makers seeking to understand and enhance public support for net zero policies. By understanding the factors that influence public perceptions of net zero policies, policy makers can develop more effective strategies for building consensus and driving action on climate change. Here are 3 key take aways: 1 - Britons are worried about climate change, however there has been a slight softening in concern in recent years. Could the cost-of-living crisis be overshadowing the climate crisis? 2 - Public support for net zero policies is significantly influenced by personal impacts, so framing policies in terms of positive personal impacts boosts support. Cost savings are a particularly strong motivator especially on policies like adjusted product pricing & EV subsidies 3 - We need to make climate action personal & relatable. Highlighting the co-benefits, like cost savings and convenience, is crucial for building public support. Great article in TIME: 2024 Must be the Year for Exponential Climate Action "In 2024, we need to stitch together and level up the climate ambition of the range of subnational actors that are critical to delivering on country-based climate commitments," write Lawrence Tubiana, CEO of the European Climate Foundation, and Catherine McKenna, Canada's former Minister of Environment in TIME magazine. They highlight 5 key action areas that must be taken, including aligning national and subnational net zero action. “Businesses, financial institutions, cities and regions each play a critical role. The UN’s “Integrity Matters” report, released in 2022, defined what it takes to make credible net zero commitments, including verifiable transition plans that reduce emissions and move money to clean energy. “Thanks to work by civil society and initiatives like the Bloomberg-Macron Net Zero Data Public Utility, large companies and financial institutions can be held accountable for their net zero pledges. “The UN’s new TaskForce on Net Zero policy, announced at COP 28 will help accelerate the shift that is already underway to move from voluntary net zero initiatives to regulated requirements,” they write in this #mustread in TIME. Over 80 people across the political spectrum have now signed the pledge, showing that local leaders are united in delivering an evidence-based, inclusive Net Zero transition. 📝 https://lnkd.in/eGgtHVhY Alongside this, 𝑍𝑒𝑟𝑜 𝐼𝑛: 𝐴𝑐𝑐𝑒𝑙𝑒𝑟𝑎𝑡𝑖𝑛𝑔 𝐿𝑜𝑐𝑎𝑙 𝐶𝑙𝑖𝑚𝑎𝑡𝑒 𝐴𝑐𝑡𝑖𝑜𝑛 set out key actions for those who are elected next Thursday: 1. Commit to ambitious, evidence-based Net Zero action plans co-designed with local residents, publishing yearly progress 2. Work collaboratively across regions and sectors, using their roles as conveners of place to deliver a joined-up local Net Zero ecosystem and influence area-wide emissions 3. Engage communities as valued partners in shaping and delivering a shared Net Zero vision 4. Champion a transition with fairness at its heart to deliver positive social, economic and health outcomes for all 5. Excellent piece from Sam Alvis this week in his Election Energy newsletter. The steps to solve the climate crisis can often seem beyond the touch of every day lives. People see and feel the climate changing and they overwhelmingly support striving for net zero, but the individual policies to get there often come up against resistance, so how does that change? Meeting people where they are is crucial. Respecting their fears and worries a positive, not something to be shied away from. Sam argues for "making a virtue of everyday concerns" by showing the transition as it happens locally, in small, beneficial steps that improve lives, not hurt. As Sam says, net zero should be a series of deeply ordinary decisions. Saving a few quid here, making your home a little better there, doing your bit for the environment and your community. Supporting people to do that, and celebrating when it works, are key. #climate #energy #netzero https://lnkd.in/eQzb69me

With so many financial challenges and distractions within the current corporate environment, it is too often the case that companies can not afford or focus on any substantial environmental issues. The complexities of trying to set achievable targets make it more challenging to gain engagement at the board level. However, there are so many innovative and credible programs and partnerships that companies can work with, but they just don't know where to start.
Less than a third (27%) of businesses who have set net-zero targets are on track to reach net-zero by 2050 or sooner 🤔 This is just one of the many insights from our annual Climate Commitments Survey, for which we surveyed 1,400 business owners and decision-makers to understand the challenges, opportunities, and barriers they face in their journey towards net-zero. We found that more and more businesses are starting their journey to net-zero, with 72% of those surveyed having measured their carbon footprint over the past few years - but the majority are not on course to hit their targets. Sales Director - Food & Dairy at GEA North America - Always happy to help our customers with innovative solutions for a Better World!
There's no sugar-coating it: We are collectively falling short of our climate ambitions. 📉🌱 The business sector, in particular, has a unique responsibility – and opportunity to look beyond internal efforts and scale solutions across the entire value chain. How? GEA CEO Stefan Klebert shared three essential steps to combat corporate Scope 3 emissions in the World Economic Forum Agenda blog for the World Economic Forum Annual Meeting in Davos, Switzerland. Find out how businesses can curb greenhouse gas emissions from suppliers and products sold – known as Scope 3 emissions. They're often the largest portion of a company’s carbon footprint. 👣 https://lnkd.in/egr-kZtJ #WorldEconomicForum #scope3emissions #engineeringforabetterworld #GEAGroup

'It’s time. We’re in the age of urgency.’ 🌎 ⏳ This year’s #ClimateWeekNYC emphasises the urgent need to intensify climate mitigation and unite the industry to overcome barriers. The latest update from the Science Based Targets initiative favours using carbon credits for 'Beyond Value Chain Mitigation' (BVCM) over offsetting emissions without first reducing them. While we acknowledge the importance of maintaining robust standards and are encouraged by their continuous improvement, we cannot remain idle as the time to meet the Paris Agreement targets slips away. Businesses can make a significant impact by engaging in the Voluntary Carbon Market (VCM). Here are six key reasons why #CarbonCredits are vital for global decarbonisation efforts. → Discover why high-impact carbon credits are key to your sustainability strategy › gdze.ro/credits #GoodZero #ClimateAction #ParisAgreement

📄 Just published: The 2024 Climate Corporate Responsibility Monitor assesses the climate pledges of 51 of the world’s leading companies — and finds they significantly miss the mark. Though the evidence couldn't be clearer about the pivotal importance of 2030 targets, the median absolute emissions reduction commitments by 2030 for these companies was as little as 30%🔥But the world needs a 43% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions and 48% in carbon emissions below 2019 levels to limit the global temperature increase to 1.5°C 🌍 Meeting these goals is not only environmentally crucial but also vitally important for our future stability and prosperity. You can find all the details of the research in the 2024 Corporate Climate Responsibility Monitor: https://lnkd.in/dqryeGsJ Or you can join today’s virtual launch with Thomas Day Sybrig Smit (NewClimate Institute) Gilles Dufrasne and Sabine B Frank (Carbon Market Watch), Johnny White (ClientEarth), Guillaume BONE (WWF-France) and Alexis McGivern (Oxford Net Zero) ➡ https://lnkd.in/ea848SHG
