Today, we had the privilege of conducting a Theatre Fire Marshal Course at the historic His Majesty's Theatre. As we reflect on the vital role of fire safety, it's fitting to remember two significant events in the theatre's history that underscore the importance of our training.
🔥 His Majesty’s Theatre has a storied past, the site has been associated with a playhouse longer than any other theatre in London, except for the Theatre Royal Drury Lane. Throughout its history, the theatre has seen four different buildings and numerous name changes.
The original building was destroyed by fire in 1789. It was rebuilt and became the largest theatre in England. However, on December 6, 1867, the theatre suffered another devastating fire, which destroyed the venue in less than an hour. The blaze was ferocious and swift, reducing the grand structure to a hollow shell of stone outer walls.
The interior, made largely of wood and filled with flammable materials such as stage sets, costumes, and seating, was rapidly consumed by the flames.
These tragic events not only destroyed a beloved cultural institution but also highlighted the urgent need for advancements in fire safety and prevention.
At RB Health and Safety Solutions, we offer Theatre Fire Training courses, Fire Risk Assessments, and Fire Door Inspections. We aim to ensure that everyone is better prepared and equipped to prevent and respond to fires, so that the events of the past don't repeat themselves.

How do you make theatre accessible to adult neurodivergent audiences?
Auckland Theatre Company is at the beginning of its relaxed performance journey and its Head of Strategy, Natasha Pearce, says that asking is the only way to create a programme that meets the needs of the community.
“Our hope is that our programme will continue to improve and audiences will grow. "As one of the first arts companies to develop relaxed performances for adult and late-teen audiences, we know we will get it wrong sometimes. But we hope we get it right more often and that we learn from our mistakes.
“We also hope that other organisations see that if we can offer theatre of scale and ambition and include relaxed performances in our season, then they can too.”
Thanks for your great mahi, ATC.

Participation Theatre
If you aren’t co-creating, you might be taking part in participation theatre.
If more is going on backstage than in front of the curtain – the scope, budget, and key decisions of a project are a done deal – it’s participation theatre.
One is a polished performance, and the other is messy in the middle.
It might be time to put down the camera, pull back the curtain, and ignore the viewing figures.

Great piece on on BBC News Breakfast showcasing the benefits of local theatre. Amazing work Joshua McTaggart from the Theatres Trust. Nina picked up the difficulties in finding local productions that Stagely Ltd looks to solve!
We've experienced the issues discovering local theatre that's why we founded Stagely Ltd - an app to help people discover theatre - helping people find theatre where it is more accessible both financially and geographically to create new young and diverse audiences and crew for theatres across the UK.
