When the work you are doing necessarily benefits from diverse perspectives……
Creating spaces where we can hear from all voices is becoming increasingly important but getting that right is not easy.
What does good look like? ⬇️
Taking a look at facilitation as an enabler-
Taking 3 parts of my week which all had examples
⚪️ Large group event (200+)
⚪️ Board development training
⚪️ Midlands talent management.
The latter two highlighted because they are particularly tough calls - working with a room full of facilitators. The key success here, in advanced facilitation is agility, namely working with what the group brings while delivering outcomes.
The large event was in a sports hall with a couple of hundred system partners. The atmosphere was vibrant with an event designed to enable lots of interaction. Efforts made for facilitator support and guidance.
During the world cafe style sessions, I joined a table with a facilitator who was remarkable in her ability to enable listening and participation. She caught some key insights, encouraging all members to speak and prompted without interrupting flow. Brilliant. (She is in on my radar now to help others as we need lots more!)
Outstanding facilitation in my world, is about how we hear from the group as a whole. What I mean by this is -
what is generated/sparked when together. Individual voices are insightful, but it’s this joint whole voice that will lead us to our future. That may be nuanced and specialist but with continued practice and a small amount of reflection and training it is within reach for all.
