Earlier this week a city government somewhere in the USA sent me a proposal to review. There’s a cellular communications site on city property. It’s been there for years. The now-ancient ground lease is going to expire soon, so the tower company is ready to negotiate another long-term lease. At the city’s request, I wrote a report about the valuation of the site with recommendations on how to proceed and the goals they should work toward. As the former Director of National System Development for a major wireless carrier, I bring insider knowledge of the processes and objectives of the carriers and the tower management companies. I’m pro-wireless, but represent the city’s interests, not the carrier’s. In many cases the objectives are aligned. The carriers want to provide great coverage while making a profit, and the cities want to provide excellent communications services – including emergency communications – to their residents, while generating revenue from site rental. But there are areas of contention. Microcells on utility poles in the urban core may have cooling fans with noise levels that are unacceptable on a hot summer night, right outside your apartment window. There are hazardous materials considerations, such as Federal reporting requirements on sulfuric acid in large battery banks. And, of course, there’s always the NIMBY group (Not In My Back Yard), who have cell phones in their pockets but don’t want the towers close by. I’ve been in City Council meetings to provide information to alleviate their concerns. Can you provide me with broadband and phones but the site is currently a ploughed field? Hold my🍺 It is important when arriving at a purpose built site to understand how you can get conventional broadband services to a location thats never been serviced before. Our engineers have years of experience in the preparation and deployment of broadband services and who also dont believe that 'it cant be done' is an acceptable answer. A solution can ALWAYS be provided. After walking this particular site, we have established how the fibre will be brought in. Where it will be coming from. Checked the poles prior to reaching out to Openreach to establish if they are safe to climb and operate on. Its these small factors that make the broadband installation go in so much smoother. There seems to be two important conversations, aside from the performance of the product itself, that are often brought up: #remotemanagement & methodology of #installation. Since I recently posted about our remote management, today I’ll discuss installation. In short, there is no other product in the world that has the flexibility and scalability the #QUATRA family of products has. QUATRA utilizes diversity in its #cabling options (i.e., #CAT6, #Fiber & #Coax) and several antenna installation methods that coincide with end user’s building density. Wide open, less-dense environments, like a #warehouse or #retail store, will utilize the "ceiling omni antenna" option, whilst a greatly dense environment like a #k12 or #HigherEd building could utilize the "horizontal coax run(s)" option.
