“We will not succumb to a status quo that responds to the existence of trade-offs by always saying no.” - Rachel Reeves One of the key functions of leadership is to face difficult trade-offs and policy choices squarely, make the critical decisions, mitigate the risks, and explain to and persuade the public why the selected course of action is the best option that serves the long-term interest of the nation. This can be bedevilling, to be sure, but simply saying no to preserve the status quo is akin to the proverbial kick of the can down the road. This is not costless in nature. With the passage of time, the problems and trade-offs will become more difficult, costly, and intractable.
