📢 Fresh findings from Society of Interventional Radiology examine the prevalence of Conflicts of Interest #COI among #InterventionalRadiologists and related specialists on social media. A deep dive into device/company mentions on X (formerly Twitter) and potential bias. 🧐💡 @SIRspecialists Study Scope: • Analyzed 13,809 X posts between Oct and Dec 2021 • Focus: Device/company mentions by US interventional radiologists & related fields 🔎 COI Stats Unveiled: • Out of 80 posts mentioning 100 devices/companies, 53% had COI 🚨 • 40% of interventional radiologists with device mentions linked to COI • Neurosurgeons showed a higher COI rate of 62% ⬆️ 🔍 Comparative Results: • Physicians mentioning a device/company are 3.7x more likely to have COI compared to controls (53/100 vs 14/100, p<0.001) • Median received payment for those with COI: $2,270 💵 • Crucially, none of these COIs were disclosed in posts 🛑 📌 Takeaway: A significant correlation exists between Social media device/company mentions and financial COIs. The lack of disclosure could limit the assessment of biases in posts. 🔗 Dive deeper into the study here: https://lnkd.in/gqjkmgdD Acknowledgment to the diligent efforts of researchers from @USC_IR, @Stanford_IR, & @MountSinaiIR for spotlighting this pressing issue! 🙌 @_trwebb, @michaeljrepajic, @IR_Ethics, @FiveNada, @TherealDoctorJ, & team! Until #interventionalradiology is recognised as a distinct specialty in Australia, patients will continue to have restricted #access to pinhole treatments. We are all trying to negotiate the glass ceiling above us but there is a widespread issue of suboptimal allocation of resources and inherent government restrictions because everyone thinks we are just "reporting scans". GPs and patients don't even know who we are or what we can do. The solution is top-down: specialty recognition, just like in the USA, Canada, Portugal, Japan, and the list goes on... Let's see what #irad can do: - Life saving treatments to stop bleeding in hospital patients or after motor vehicle accidents - Life saving treatments to solve sepsis in unwell hospital patients and outpatients - Limb-saving treatments for blocked arteries in the leg - Pinhole treatments for heavy menstrual bleeding that avoid hysterectomy - Pinhole treatments for lower urinary symptoms in men that avoid large prostate operations - Pinhole treatments to cure some types of cancer - Pinhole treatments to give chemotherapy directly into the centre of a cancer ...all this through an invisible hole and with lower cost than many open surgical alternatives. And yet, on many occasions patients still haven't heard of us or been given an option to see an IR - because on paper and with the government we don't (yet) exist! To me, there is immense value for patients, hospitals, and the wider healthcare system. Wouldn't you want a high-value IR department in your hospital? Well done to The Royal Australian & New Zealand College of Radiologists (RANZCR), Hannah Ireland, Justin Whitley for the advocacy video and all medical practitioners should support the cause. It could be you on our operating table one day!

🩻Dynamic digital radiography (DDR) takes step forward in #lung imaging. Dynamic #digital #radiography (DDR) has shown for the first time that it can be used to automatically capture lung signal changes during forced breathing in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), according to a recent study. The finding validates fully automated software for use in procedures and advances DDR a step toward clinical use, the technology’s U.S. and Japanese developers wrote. “This method plays an important role in overcoming the barriers to its clinical implementation, including the need for trained experts and the time-consuming process of manual contouring,” noted lead author Noriaki Wada, MD, of Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston. The study was published in the December 2024 issue of the European Journal of Radiology Open. DDR is a novel functional imaging technique that uses sequential images obtained by a pulsed x-ray generator and a flat panel detector with a large field of view. Previous studies using DDR have focused on visualizing dynamic changes in lung fields during respiration that reflect changes of air volume inside the alveoli. Recently, however, Wada's group developed fully automated software that continuously contours and tracks lung fields during forced breathing exams. A more nuanced analysis from Dr. Gavin Slethaug than the typical “private equity has a profit incentive, so they put profit before patients.” As someone who has spent their entire career in healthcare with both private equity and public equity as partners, that kind of shallow analysis is insulting. Are there examples of some investors who have done this? Yes, of course. But not the best investors with trusted franchises built over decades. And not organizations with leadership teams committed to creating value for ALL stakeholders. And not organizations with physicians leading at all levels right up to the board of directors. So rather than condemning a category of capital providers, one should look at the specifics of each situation. It’s amazing that even needs to be said. And…how is it that everyone seems to ignore that physicians in private practice also have a profit incentive…a very direct and personal one. Does that mean that physicians put profits ahead of patients? Of course not. Are there examples of some who have. Yes, of course. But rather than condemning an entire category of people, one should look at the specifics of each situation.
“At the end of the day, smart outside investors will be aligned with the best interests of patient care.” - Gavin Slethaug, MD Dr. Gavin Slethaug shares his experience at RP and how outside investment, when done right, can open the door to new clinical programs and new technologies like AI and enable more subspecialty imaging care—benefiting radiologists, referring physicians, hospitals, and, most importantly, patients. "The shortage of radiologists is well-known. Has the radiologist training and education system -- with its heavy focus on subspecialization -- played a role?" - Brian Casey of The Imaging Wire Deanna M Heier, PhD and I discussed with Brian the latest findings from Medality (formerly MRI Online)'s Radiology Practice Development Report, which surveyed 3,300 radiologists and found: 1. Despite heavy sub-specialization, radiologists read on average 4.5 specialties in daily practice 2. Work-life balance ranked as #1 most important factor in choosing a job, followed by salary and location 3. Radiologists are increasingly interested in entering the workforce sooner, over 70% of residents surveyed indicated interest in an on-the-job private practice fellowship No one covers the radiology industry better than Brian. Tune in to our short interview with him to discuss our findings re: the radiology workforce. https://lnkd.in/guzFPx3H. h/t Jake Fishman, Cynira Clay, Trevor Leb

Writing an effective diagnostic report is crucial in healthcare and clinical settings. Here are five takeaways for improving your radiology reports: - 𝐃𝐞𝐥𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐫 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐠𝐨𝐨𝐝𝐬 Anchor the impression with the favored diagnosis or differential diagnosis followed by the key findings supporting it. - 𝐒𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐢𝐭 𝐜𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐥𝐲 The impression should use phrasing similar to speaking directly to a provider or presenting at a multidisci-plinary conference and avoid the technical language used only by radiologists. - 𝐊𝐞𝐞𝐩 𝐢𝐭 𝐫𝐞𝐥𝐞𝐯𝐚𝐧𝐭 Avoid clinically insignificant items in the impression that do not require the ordering provider's attention or action. - 𝐊𝐞𝐞𝐩 𝐢𝐭 𝐫𝐞𝐥𝐞𝐯𝐚𝐧𝐭 Provide thoughtful detailed recommendations that help the ordering provider reach a specific diagnosis or direct the next steps in management. - 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐮𝐞 𝐭𝐨 𝐠𝐫𝐨𝐰 Tweak your reporting and understand its broad impact by asking providers for feedback and by following up on biopsy results, hospital courses, and procedural and operative notes.
