Founders often encounter corporate managers who seem interested in investing in their projects but negotiations seem to last forever. Here’s how to quickly spot these “corporate undertakers.” When I was at Rosatom, I met a manager, responsible for startups in a particular industry. We discussed a promising project, linked to mine, and I suggested we make it a full-fledged startup and that he become their CEO. Immediately, he pulled back, saying it was too early. I was a bit shocked, as it seemed a great career jump for the guy. Except that it wasn’t. This type of manager enjoys the perks of their position—good pay, travel, and prestige—without the risk. Approving a startup means taking responsibility, risking failure, getting minimal rewards, and above all, a bad rep in the company. To spot an undertaker, check their track record. If they’ve approved few or no projects, they’re likely avoiding risk. Also, check if they ever were in founders’ roles or at least in VC. If none of the above match, it’s best to move on and find a corporate champion who will support your venture. When I left a new running business behind me two years later, that guy still worked in the same position and had no approved projects.
