📝 New International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) report describes the methodology and design of the SPLAT-CMP model, the modelling framework for electricity and transmission capacity expansion optimization behind Africa Continental Master Plan (#CMP). Supported through an extensive capacity building programme delivered by the agency as official modelling partner of CMP, the SPLAT-CMP model has been developed as a joint effort of African power pools and AUDA NEPAD leading the #CMP initiative. Built from IRENA’s long standing SPLAT-MESSAGE modelling methodology, SPLAT-CMP marks a major advancement in continental power system planning for #Africa. Learn more 👇 https://lnkd.in/g-hDspkZ

Proud of having led the writing of this International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) report, focusing on a tailored #power systems model for the #African continent. This SPLAT-CMP model was created for the African Continental Power Systems Masterplan (CMP) with the African Union Development Agency-NEPAD, supported by the European Union. The model describes many innovative features of capacity expansion modelling for the African continent, such as: ☀️ Site-specific representation of all types of variable #renewables (#solar, #wind, #hydro); ⚡ Costing of future #interconnections based on explicit considerations of line #voltage, length, and terrain; 💨 Consideration of a virtual "weak wind" season to better represent the real variability of wind while keeping computational times low; 🤝🏻 Use of GitHub for simple data tracking & #versioncontrol to enable collaboration across a multi-continental team. https://lnkd.in/ec-c5bNy

The Continental Master Plan (#CMP) for Africa is not just a plan; it represents a groundbreaking platform for planning coordination across the five African power pools. IRENA's SPLAT Africa models provided the starting point for this coordination. Under the leadership of African Union Development Agency-NEPAD, the CMP modeling team, including technical experts from the power pools, thoroughly discussed scenarios, assumptions, and results. These discussions led to the development of the SPLAT-CMP model presented in this report. International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) supported this process with extensive training sessions and technical meetings, together with our partners International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and European Union Global Technical Assistance Facility for Sustainable Energy experts. I hope this report serves as a valuable reference for the SPLAT-CMP modeling team as the program enters the next phase, and that it also brings transparency to the methodology, allowing practitioners and the scientific community to better scrutinise our approach.

I welcome International Energy Agency (IEA)'s Clean Energy Market Monitor. The report shows that clean energy deployment remains overly concentrated in advanced economies. In most emerging and developing economies, hydropower is the dominant renewable energy source. International Hydropower Association (IHA) is focused on the need for increased clean energy investment and deployment in emerging and developing economies. We will be co-hosting with African Development Bank Group and Mainstream Energy Solutions Limited and the IHA Board see series of roundtables in Abuja in May to drive investments in Africa in sustainable hydropower. We cannot deliver on our clean energy goals without a flexible mix of energy from water, wind and sun. #WithHydropower Eng Lamu Audu Anton-Louis Olivier Erik Solheim https://lnkd.in/ehudW3ve

The latest International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) report showcases a significant milestone: Global renewable energy jobs are up from 12.7 million in 2021 to 13.5 million in 2022. With Asia accounting for nearly two-thirds of these opportunities and China contributing 41% to the global total, it's clear that the renewable energy sector is thriving. Let’s continue to invest in #GreenTechnologies and create more #JobOpportunities! 🌱🌏 #IRENA #RenewableEnergy #PoweringJobs #SDG2 #SDG7 #SDGs #EndEnergyPovertyFaster [Image Source: IRENA and ILO (2023]

The roles of hydropower in the energy transition: generation and storage.
Substantially more long duration energy storage is needed to support the integration of variable renewable energy. Pumped storage hydropower (PSH) is the solution, a mature and proven technology that already provides around 90% of installed electricity storage globally. Today at the Global Renewables Hub at #COP28, Long Duration Energy Storage Council (LDES Council) and IHA co-hosted an event to discuss the ignored crisis within the crisis: the need for pumped storage hydro. Moderated by Malcolm Turnbull with experts from across storage and hydro Julia Souder CEO LDES, Katie Jereza, Vice President of Corporate Affairs, Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI), Xinlu Wang, Ph.D. candidate, Tsinghua University, and Luc Rémont, Chairman and CEO of EDF Group. #3xrenewables #WithHydropower

To achieve the national targets set in the SIDS national energy policies and those reflected in the Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs), tailoured and accessible financing is needed. According to an analysis by the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) on the updated NDCs, a minimum investment of USD 10.5 billion is required to meet the additional capacity target of 7.4 GW by 2030, of which 3.2 GW is dependent on external financial assistance.
💡 New Expert Insights article! According to International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), Small Island Developing States need a minimum investment of USD 10.5 billion to meet global additional capacity demand of 7.4 GW and to become energy resilient by 2030. Upcoming SIDS Ministerial at #IRENA14A will focus on mobilisation of financing, decarbonisation efforts in SIDS and will also identify priority areas for the SIDS Lighthouse Initiative.
