Chief Dot Connector @ Strategy for Hire, LLC | Strategic Healthcare Marketing Leadership and Guidance
Thanks, John, for sharing this observation that hospitals and health systems need to move more quickly toward a focus on patient experience as they seek a competitive edge. From my perspective, health systems were not built for speed or agility. In fact they weren’t designed at all … they’ve been “Frankensteined” into existence through lots of individual, independent hospitals entering into alliances, mergers, acquisitions and partnerships. Each was engineered separately and it’s been super hard to figure out how to operate differently now that their worlds have changed: from reimbursement models to specialization to shifting focus in terms of audience. And in the meantime, as systems get bigger, the pressures increase to operate more and more like a for-profit publicly held company: diversifying revenue sources, maximizing investment income, chasing short-term financial goals, neglecting to establish long-term strategic plans and sticking to them. Of course, the complexity of this industry and its dependency on key staffing strategies to deliver its “product” contribute to its challenges in bringing in leaders with new perspectives: “proven track records” in transformation are not simple to replicate, depending on the market(s), competitive situations, deeply ingrained culture and brand strength (or weakness). And there are no quick or inexpensive solutions. It all makes it very challenging to actually make changes … and why we find ourselves talking about the same aspirational things year after year after year. Finding ways to incorporate a #consumer perspective and #patientexperience begins with a commitment from leadership to prioritize this audience. There are so many ways to deliver on it; start with a strategy guiding the work.

Never let it be said that hospitals and health systems can maneuver a turn faster than a fully loaded freight tanker navigating the high seas. How slow can you go?! "Health system C-suites are looking ahead for the next differentiating factor and many are coming to the same conclusion: patient experience." Duh...that's been the talk for at least the last decade, or forever. The buzzwords are there..."collaborative care models," "consumer experience," "system connectedness," "personalized care plans," "community connections," "virtual access." Can we 'walk the talk' a little faster? #patientexperience #hospitals
