PhDs - Your PhD program IS work experience. Did you schedule and assign work to members of a team? That's project management. Did you apply for and receive grant funding? That's corporate development and finance. Did you teach students? That's mentorship and skill building (aka, learning and development). Did you apply for and get accepted to present at conferences? That's marketing. Did you lead a team on a project? That's management. When you're applying for industry jobs, go beyond what's immediately apparent. Make a list of all the things you did during your academic program. Then find the industry correlates. It's that simple. 🔁 Repost to help a friend or colleague :) ______________________ Are you a PhD struggling to land interviews for industry jobs? DM me, I can help. #phd #jobseekers #hr #resume

The worst kind of opinion/advice you can give to anyone is "It depends on what you want" and then not add anything after that. These days it has become very common for people to use this line and be politically correct. The problem is - it is trivial that everything is relative and it depends. But when someone is asking for your view on something, say "it depends" by all means, but then add your own experience. You being politically correct doesn't help at all. A graduating Phd student asks me "What should I pursue - academic career or industry job"? - Of course the answer starts with "It depends on what you want". I wanted a more balanced work life and time to pursue my other interests, that is why I joined industry. But at the same time, I must say, I used to get more intellectual satisfaction when I was doing academic research. So you have to choose what you want.

Academic Escape & Career Clarity Coach for PhDs | Job Search & Career Educator | Keynote Speaker & Workshop Facilitator | Online Community Builder
All I had to do was write 150 words on the topic I'd spend the last 5 years working on, becoming the world's leading expert. I couldn't make myself do it. This was back in December 2011, when I was nearing the end of my doctorate in history. My defense was already scheduled, for February. I was supposed to contribute to a proposal a few of us junior scholars were putting together for a conference in our field. I'd been to the conference a few times, presented at it, had met some of these folks in person already. Writing those words should have come easily to me. And yet. My heart wasn't in it. This was the crux of the issue. While I did successfully defend my dissertation and graduate with my PhD in 2012, the enthusiasm I previously had for my academic work never came back in a sustained way. That's okay. I wound up building an entirely different career for myself, one that I never would have predicted. And it's been pretty damn cool, if I do say so myself! I know the clients I help to change careers now have different stories from mine, but there's always overlap in our (complicated, ever-changing) feelings toward the academy. Does my story resonate with your own experience? — 👋🏻 I'm Jen! I help professors, postdocs, and other overworked, underappreciated PhDs change careers without sacrificing what's important. 👉🏻 Do you want to land a great-fit role that lets you live where you want, get paid well, and do meaningful work with supportive colleagues? As you progress through your graduate program, one of the most important decisions you will make is selecting your research area and niche within your broader field. This choice forms a core part of your professional identity and has impacts that can last throughout your career. As you weigh options for potential research areas, keep the following factors in mind: 1. Passion - Your research area should genuinely excite and interest you intellectually. You will be immersed in this topic for years through your thesis, publications, and initial jobs. Pick an area you feel passionate about pursuing in depth. 2. Marketability - Consider whether specializing in a particular research area will make you competitive on the academic or industry job market, especially for the types of jobs that most appeal to you down the road. A niche area may mean less competition, while a trendier area may have more positions. 3. Fit - Ensure the research areas you are most intrigued by align with potential advisors and departments you might join. Reflect on how taking certain angles may impact your ability to work with certain professors or labs. 4. Funding - In applied fields, factor in whether projects in a potential research domain are likely to attract funding from governments, companies, or other sources. More funding means more resources for your work. Your research pursuits form a major part of your graduate school journey and professional identity. Mull over options carefully keeping short and long term career goals in mind before diving into a multi-year research commitment. I welcome any questions as you work through this important choice. Wishing you clarity and success!

Transforming careers for Ph.D.'s Engineers & Researchers Through My RRAPID Framework | | Founder Dynamic Professionals Hub | Scientist (Ex-GE) | Speaker @ IITs & corporates
Move on Ph.D’s. If you feel too attached to your work then rightly so Because you spent years, your blood and sweat to make those experiments work, write that damn thesis, and built that expertise. But your research’s primary job was to get you a Ph.D degree, So as good as it feels to contribute something original to the knowledge pool, We also need to acknowledge that our Ph.D. contribution is a tiny spec in the entire spectrum of knowledge available. So what got you the degree, won’t get you to the next stop which may be an industry job. You have to let go, the wish most of the time, to find opportunities in future that align perfectly with your past work. But you don’t have to let go the skills you picked up in the process, Which is writing, critical thinking, building from scratch, executing plans, data analysis and much more!! And you also have to pick up new skills, ( nope no option there ) that allow you to Maximize your possibilities To feel valued and To thrive!! Will you? #rimadey #careercoach #researcher P.s: Coming to the original contribution? How original was your contribution? In all honesty Mine was an extension of what existed, with a new perspective. Does that count as original?? I wonder!!

🌟 Are you unknowingly limiting your future career options with your academic choices? 🌟 During my university days, I remember the mixed reactions when I chose to major in philosophy – a field many viewed as "impractical". Fast forward, those critical thinking skills I honed are now key assets in my current role in strategic management consulting. 🔍 A recent discussion prompted by an insightful piece delves deeper into this topic. It challenges the conventional wisdom that certain subjects, such as arts, music, and foreign languages, may not lead directly to lucrative or stable career paths. 🎨 The narrative suggests that while it's true some subjects don't have a straightforward career trajectory like STEM fields, this doesn't make them less valuable. The skills cultivated through these "limiting" subjects, like creativity, cultural understanding, and innovative problem-solving are increasingly in demand in our diverse, global economy. ⚖️ It's crucial, though, to weigh both passion and practicality. The world is full of successful professionals who followed their passion in arts or humanities and carved niches in sectors like technology, design, and marketing. 💭 What's your take on this? Have you or someone you know transformed an "impractical" degree into a thriving career? How do you balance passion and practicality when making academic or career choices? Join the conversation! Share your stories and insights. 🔄 #Education #CareerDevelopment #JobMarket #SkillsPassport #FutureOfWork #Innovation #CreativeCareers
