AlphaFold solved what seemed an impossible problem for a hundred years, predicting the structure of a protein from its sequence. Apart from the incredible achievement three years ago, the research has moved on. Today Large Language Models are everywhere and can ingest huge amounts of text and then perform tasks efficiently and accurately. We forget that DNA and protein are the language of life (4 and 20 characters respectively). Why not use LLMs with these sequences? Why limit ourselves to using them to predict the structure of a protein? Three years after AlphaFold2, LLMs trained with DNA and protein sequences are about to change biology and open perspectives as gene editing for diseases. I discuss it from this perspective on Towards Data Science
Catch up with the latest research at the intersection of gene editing and LLMs — Salvatore Raieli's in-depth overview explores one of the most exciting of emerging ML subfields.
