Happy Monday everyone! ✨ One week in at Custom Neon® and I couldn’t be more excited to be part of this amazing company! ✨ From day one, the energy here has been incredible. The team—spanning the US, Australia 🇦🇺, and London 🇬🇧—has been so welcoming and supportive. While I haven’t had the chance to meet anyone from the London office just yet, the US and Australia teams have been absolutely wonderful. The positivity, teamwork, and willingness to help have blown me away—it’s clear I’m surrounded by people who love what they do. 💡 But let’s talk about growth. Because growth isn’t always easy—it’s a grind. 🚀 One thing I’m tackling right now is Adobe Illustrator. It’s been a challenge, and I’ll admit there are moments I wish I could master it faster. But I keep reminding myself: struggles are just the effect of learning something new. Every moment I push through, every frustration I overcome, is making me better and helping me grow. 💪 Growth isn’t comfortable, but it’s where the magic happens. 🌱 It’s where we stretch, improve, and prove to ourselves that we’re capable of so much more. I’m beyond grateful to work for a company like Custom Neon, where the culture, the people, and the opportunities inspire me every day. Whether it’s in the US, Australia, or London, this team truly shines. ✨ To anyone facing similar struggles: embrace them. The struggle is where you grow, and growth is what makes you shine. 🌟 Here’s to learning, growing, and glowing brighter every day! #CustomNeon #Grateful #GrowthMindset #ProfessionalDevelopment #TeamCulture #NewSkills #LearningAndGrowing

Finding Unity in Creativity In a world that moves fast and demands constant innovation, finding time to connect with like-minded souls isn't just refreshing—it's essential. Every other week, I have the privilege of joining an online chat (Designer’s Cafe) with two fellow graphic designers Peter Kuyt 🌳 and Luke Walwyn. Together, we navigate the complexities of creative design and the intricacies of running solo businesses. Our regular chats, covering everything from the latest design trends, AI innovations, favourite fonts and coffee critiques, serve as much more than a simple exchange of ideas - they're a vital lifeline, connecting us through shared passions and individual challenges. This camaraderie not only fuels our creativity but also bolsters our resilience. It’s tough out there; laughing and engaging with peers who understand our unique hurdles and triumphs, helps build a supportive network that empowers us all to thrive. I think the laughing may be one of the most important aspects if I’m honest. In summary this illuminates the fact that we are stronger together. If you're on the journey of managing your own creative venture, I encourage you to reach out and weave these essential bonds. How do you connect with fellow professionals? Share your experiences and let’s celebrate the community that keeps us inspired! #design #community #designerscafe

Incredibly excited to be giving a new talk—"Design is 'Connection' Made Manifest"—on Seattle Design Festival 's main stage this August 18th. The themes in this presentation have been congealing for me over the past few years, evolving through my other conference talks, written works, and even business / career decisions. Across "why" we're creating, "how" we're creating, and "where" we're creating, our value is infinitely greater than the sum of our choice of digital tools. I'll (currently) be giving this talk only twice this year, with the second event to be announced soon. The 'formal' talk description: "What is design, if not ‘connection’ made manifest? Given the state of the world over the past few years, with designers navigating the global pandemic, mass layoffs, hybrid / remote work, and a struggling economy, connection is at is apex of relevance. The connection of us to one another, us to our work, and our work to those who engage with it. Be it a concert venue poster, a website, or an app icon, design is solving the problem of engaging people—agnostic of their circumstances—to connect and convey an experience. When we’re in touch with our values, focus on craft evolution over tool loyalty, and create in an environment of support and inclusion: ‘connection’ is the result. Via the power of storytelling with actionable methods, Justin Dauer will show us how to get there." And on the Seattle Design Festival itself, via their website: "The Seattle Design Festival is a platform for bold design conversations. We believe that design is for everyone and that inclusive co-design practices are essential to shaping an equitable Seattle. We are multidisciplinary, socially engaged and civic minded. The Seattle Design Festival was founded in 2011 as a strategic initiative of AIA Seattle to promote public dialogue and community engagement about the role and impact of design in urban life." Seattle Design Festival is a FREE event for the public. You can't be a founding designer without being a generalist to an extent. The best founding designers I've observed: - They can handle ambiguity - Often generalists - Huge growth mindset - Understand business - Learn new things/skills They often leave when the team gets bigger, as the job becomes different. Its critical when hiring to see if a designer can will be as effective through growth for example a founding designer is very different to a corporate designer. It's no wonder founding designers often start their own businesses or side hustles. It was great to contribute to this discussion with Kate Syuma in her new playbook with Growthmates which has: - Insights on design career topics, emerging challenges for growth and research teams from leaders at companies such Dropbox, Canva, Coda, Amplitude, and more. - Frameworks for delivering high-quality experience and scaling Growth processes 100% recommend. Great read about the current and future position of Product Design in tech. Could not agree more. "Design workflows at most tech companies follow an incredible number of structured tasks: for each project, designers must create user personas, user stories, journey maps, wireframes, user interviews, and much more. These concepts originated in the service design industry and initially helped facilitate a very human-focused design process – which, of course, is good. However, driven by a desire from businesses to turn design into a process-heavy, measurable function, we’re filling our time with checklists instead of focusing on the very thing that makes designers relevant: our ability to propose new points of view and delight users with meaningful experiences. These core competences that were inherited from graphic design have been replaced with a poor man’s version of an anthropology major where the act of design is mostly based on averaging user opinions." https://lnkd.in/dwJhER7e

🚨 Hey Design Community! 🚨 I wanted to share a personal insight about something I’ve noticed in our field: the importance of seamless entry in our designs. I’ve seen firsthand how neglecting this aspect can lead to some pretty significant challenges: Increased Friction: We all know how frustrating it is for users when onboarding feels clunky. It’s disheartening to see drop-off rates rise just because we didn’t make that process smooth enough. User Confusion: There’s nothing worse than watching users struggle to figure out how to get started. It makes me reflect on how critical it is to create intuitive experiences that resonate from the very first interaction. Accessibility Oversights: I’m passionate about making sure everyone can engage with our designs. If we overlook accessibility in our entry points, we’re excluding a significant audience—and that’s just not right. Missed Opportunities: Every time a potential user finds the entry process cumbersome, it’s a lost chance for connection and engagement. We all want our work to make an impact! Support Overload: Complicated entries often lead to more questions and support tickets. That’s tough for our teams and can distract us from what we love doing most—designing. Let’s make a conscious effort to prioritize seamless entry in our work. It’s such a small change that can make a huge difference in how users feel about our designs. Together, we can create experiences that truly connect. I’d love to hear your thoughts or experiences on this! #Design #UserExperience #SeamlessEntry #DesignCommunity

My 6-Week Journey: Week 1 & Week 2 Recap (WallMinderApp) ### Week 1: The Spark of an Idea Embarking on a journey of consistency, dedication, and discipline, I decided to channel my efforts into creating something that would not only benefit me but also potentially many others. The idea? WallMinder - a mobile app designed to keep users on top of their schedules by displaying daily events and reminders right on their lockscreen. The research phase was both enlightening and exciting. I explored various existing solutions, identified gaps, and fine-tuned my concept. The vision became clear: WallMinder would send notifications 30 minutes before an event, a second reminder 5 minutes before the event. And a final prompt at the event time itself. If the user cancels the event after the first reminder, no further notifications will be sent until the next scheduled event. This meticulous approach ensures users never miss an important task or appointment. By the end of the week, I had a solid plan and a clear roadmap for WallMinder. ### Week 2: Bringing the Idea to Life With the idea firmly in place, it was time to get hands-on. Week two was all about transforming my vision into a tangible form. I embarked on building a toy version of WallMinder - essentially a mockup to visualize the app's interface and user experience. Creating the mockup was a fantastic exercise in translating conceptual ideas into practical designs. I focused on the user journey, ensuring that WallMinder would be intuitive, engaging, and, most importantly, effective. The mockup showcased the lockscreen notifications, the seamless reminder system, and the user interaction for managing events. It was exhilarating to see WallMinder start to take shape, even in its early form. ### Reflections and Next Steps Reflecting on these two weeks, I'm filled with a mix of enthusiasm and anticipation. The journey so far has reinforced my commitment to the project and given me valuable insights into the development process. I’m eager to dive into the next phase, where I'll start turning the mockup into a working prototype. Stay tuned for more updates as I continue this exciting journey of creating WallMinder. Here's to a productive and inspiring Week 3! buildspace #buildspace #s5 #nightsweekends #softwareengineering
