If you've known me for a while, you know I dont do work just for money. In fact, I had given up on my development career all-together in favor of my wellness company, where I could see the impact of my work directly. When my company closed down due to the pandemic & separation put and end to my life in Brazil, I moved to Miami with no idea what I would do next. Here I was, a grown up woman with all available resources - highest level of education, big support system, in a city with a booming economy - feeling completely lost. It was in my lowest moment, when I was connected to the Instituto Dara - Dara Institute. Ironically, they were based in Rio, the city I had called my home for so long. I flew back to Brazil to meet some of the most incredible women, mostly single moms, living in the most vulnerable situations, with no support systems, with too many mouths to feed, and no one there to believe in them.. and yet, to my awe, I was dumbstruck by the stories of powerful transformations as a result of their participation in Dara's incredible program, the Family Action Plan. As a recently separated mom, I FELT what they had gone through, and couldn't say no to the offer I received from Dara to become their International Development Lead to help disseminate this methodology & raise funds to reach more vulnerable people, who within two years will make a leap to earn better income, become protagonists of a new life, and transform the lives of their children, families, and communities. I know there are a lot of causes to support. But trust me, this one is VERY unique. The story of the Dr. Vera and her trajectory to change the lives of her most vulnerable patients is heartwarming, while more than 30 years of unmatched work as LAC's #1NGO - beyond impressive. As a development specialist, I've never seen so much impact created with such little resources.
