Proud to be part of the team at VCI that commissioned this report, released today. The findings are tough to read, but they’re crucial for understanding the scale of child poverty in Australia.
My hope is that this career highlight will lead to real, systemic change for children living in poverty across Australia.
The findings reveal a harsh reality:
👉 Kids who experience poverty and housing stress are more likely to suffer nervousness and unhappiness for up to a decade after leaving home.
👉 Children are 8% more likely to stay in poverty and 11% less likely to be employed as adults.
👉 Rising housing costs are hitting low-income families hardest, with rents jumping 17.8% for lower quartile rentals between 2020-2022.
👉 Many families are forced to move to more affordable housing, leading to dissatisfaction and psychological distress.
👉 An additional 102,000 children were plunged into poverty between 2021 and 2022.
👉 There are now 3.7 million people and 823,000 children living below the poverty line.
The Child Poverty in Australia 2024 report by Bankwest Curtin Economics Centre released during Homelessness Week was commissioned by the Valuing Children Initiative for the End Child Poverty campaign.
