Today marks the official signing of the contracts for the construction of IRIS², Europe's satellite constellation designed to address the EU's long-term challenges in security, safety, and resilience! Free-space optical #communication (#FSOC) is on the rise 🚀 With the #OSIRIS terminal family we are making the way for classical and #quantum communication. We at DLR Institut für Kommunikation und Navigation started on small satellites and brought #laser communications successfully onto #CubeSats. But there is much more to come. 🛰️Our Director, Laurent Jaffart, joined the CEO of the UK Space Agency, Paul Bate, for a visit to see Space INSPIRE taking shape at the Thales cleanrooms in Belfast, Northern Ireland. Space INSPIRE, supported by CNES and the European Space Agency - ESA, is a new telecommunications satellite product line, developed by Thales Alenia Space. The new software-defined satellites will offer satcom operators an agile environment to develop advanced services and seize new business opportunities via a digital, ultra-flexible solution that is fully reprogrammable in orbit.        The first Space INSPIRE’s propulsion system has recently completed the Assembly, Integration and Test activities – ready for shipment to the Thales Alenia Space Cannes facility, where it will be further integrated into the satellite.     Space INSPIRE benefits from support from CNES and ESA through the ARTES Novacom II Partnership Project. The EU didn't launch anything last night: EUSPA made a post on X similar to this one on LinkedIn, saying that "EU Launched two new Galileo satellites". The two new Galileo satellites were launched by SpaceX from Florida, onboard a Falcon 9 Rocket. Saying that "EU launched" those satellites is a misleading statement, and reflects the intention to not mention SpaceX (which is carefully avoided also in this post). It's a shame, because it’s not SpaceX's fault if Europe is lacking a launcher for those satellites. Several problems in management, competition, foresight, and ambition in the European space sector led the EU in this situation... Acknowledging the launch company which saved the situation, in a very cheap way, is the minimum EU should do. That's also because our money are spent for this. Trying to mislead people writing that "EU Launched" the satellites, or just avoiding mentioning that the launch was performed by a non-EU company, is a proper scam to EU citizens. I rarely comment publicly about those things, given my work at Space Voyaging, but this time I'm doing so as an European Citizen.

🚀 Exciting progress in European space technology! We recently held a productive workshop as part of our ongoing European space project, bringing together the Space USB consortium and our Advisory Board. The focus of this second session was twofold: 🔧 Finalizing the specifications for a universal, serial connector (similar to USB) capable of mechanically connecting two space elements and enabling data and power transfer once assembled in orbit. 💡 Debating the demonstration of prototypes in a laboratory environment. These prototypes will play a crucial role in advancing On-Orbit Servicing and assembly technologies. This marks a major step for our project milestones and towards enabling future space missions with modular, easily assembled components. We're excited about the collaborative effort driving this innovation forward! An agreement has been signed between the European Commission, European Space Agency - ESA and SpaceRise ... a consortium comprised by Eutelsat Group, Hispasat and SES Satellites ... that will see the consortium design, deliver and operate the Infrastructure for Resilience, Interconnectivity and Security by Satellite (IRIS²) for a period of 12 years.
