Fundamentally, what people need to understand is that although much of the kaupapa Māori approaches is by Māori for Māori, it is also for everyone else. The interesting part of this research that Isaac Samuels has done is that it shows that Pākeha also preferred the kaupapa Māori approach. Why is that? It's pretty simple to me. The Kaupapa Māori approach includes many aspects that I do in my own practice: - Whakawhanaungatanaga - forming a connection, humanising the interaction. Coming into a consultation with the intention that as a doctor I am only a human being and my patient is also a human being. I value every interaction I have with my patients because I realise the enormity of influence I can have on each person with the decisions we make. - Tīkanga Māori - with regards to eye exams, just asking someone permission to touch their head. This should be straight forward and intuitive. It's not nice to have someone or something so foreign touching our heads and face. - Whānau - including family and loved ones in the consultation with the patient's consent should be a no-brainer. Whether we are giving good news or bad news, people often want to be with loved ones. It is concerning that there is a lot of anti-Māori rhetoric, that anything Māori must be inferior or disadvantages Pākeha. It feels like there must be a zero-sum-game as if a group of people improve, then it must come at the expense of others. We can all benefit from kaupapa Māori interventions. #health #publichealth #ophthalmology #doctor #research #auckland #univeristy #newzealand #aotearoa
Recent Medical graduate Isaac Samuels (Ngāti Hauaa, Ngāti Tuwharetoa) grew up primarily identifying as Pākehā, but through the University’s Māori and Pacific Admissions Scheme (MAPAS), and the passing of his koro, he embraced his heritage. Read Isaac’s story here: https://bit.ly/4amU1xP

Reflecting on a Unique Patient Experience 🩺 This week is 12weeks of my Externship at Landmark University and I wish to share some of my experiences here. FIRST 🥇 Couple of days ago, we had the opportunity to see a challenging case of Phthisis Bulbi in a patient's left eye. This individual, aged 40+, had sustained an eye injury over 30 years ago. The journey in managing this condition was indeed enlightening. He was suspected of glaucoma during a previous eye examination on his right eye, the patient's history painted a picture of perseverance in the face of adversity. Despite the complexities of their case, we were committed to providing the best possible care. One aspect that made this encounter distinct was the patient's demeanor. Their rudeness and lack of cooperation were apparent, underscoring the importance of empathy and patience in our medical practice. By approaching them with understanding and respect, we aimed to bridge the gap and establish a therapeutic alliance. Navigating through the challenges posed by the patient's condition and attitude, I'm reminded that every patient brings a unique story to the examination table. It's our duty as healthcare professionals to adapt our approach and provide holistic care that not only addresses the medical concerns but also respects the individual journey. As I reflect on this experience, I'm grateful for the opportunity to grow both professionally and personally. Each case, no matter how intricate, teaches us valuable lessons that enrich our medical practice and remind us of the human side of medicine. #Ophthalmology #MedicalPractice #PatientCare #EmpathyInMedicine #optometry #eyedoctor #eyecare #eye NB: Pic was taken from Google for educational purposes.
