Private schools in the #UK educate ~7% of all British school-age children. While not a huge share, it has remained consistently in this range for over 2 decades. It is also significant from the perspective that they hold a disproportionate share in top universities – ~40% of Oxbridge admissions are made up of #privateschool students. Already faced with rising operational costs and increasing financial pressure, the introduction of 20% VAT on #schoolfee from 2025 may put some of the smaller ones at risk, potentially leading to closures or mergers. "Other work suggests that relationships between pupil demographics and retention are “largely spurious” and that pupil demographics may instead serve as a proxy for school working conditions". The new report from think tank the Education Policy Institute attempts to unravel the complexities of what features make a school group effective, including the statement above. Its revampled online tool measure 4 metrics (pupil inclusion, pupil attainment & progress, workforce sustainability, financial management) to understand what features work best across different school groups. Their report has many caveats, including that no one school group 'structure' eg. MAT, diocese, local authority is 'best', but there are insights for all, and recommendations for further "trust quality descriptors" to improve best practice across all school groups. Do private schools really provide a better education? our research —just published in the Annals of Regional Science— suggests that the perceived advantage of private schools is not due to better quality teaching but rather the socio-economic backgrounds of the students they enrol. When accounting for factors like school composition and student demographics, private schools show no significant educational edge over public schools. ✨ Revolutionary new technologies, evolving student demographics, and shifting public perceptions. From April 18, 2024, to April 20, 2024, several issues were debated. My project "Building Virtual Cities, Training Real Skills: Cities XXL in E-Learning" was presented there, thanks to Sol Villasis, Gabriela Romo Lalama and authorities of Universidad de Las Américas (EC). ✨ "Today's colleges and universities face unprecedented changes, making a focus on the bigger picture more crucial than ever" #WSCUCARC2024 #TheBigPicture The dimension of the challenge is not only in the already complex world of academia but also touches on the employment dimension and, of course, everything to do with social justice and welfare. ✨ I would like to draw your attention to the challenges of the educational model. I am deliberately taking my interest in technology and going back to the basic question: Learning for what? ✨ To "answer", I would like to go back to Paulo Freire: "It is necessary to develop a pedagogy of the question. We are always hearing a pedagogy of the answer. Teachers answer questions that students have not asked". In short, it is an invitation to construct our own questions; there is part of the answer.
