As we prepare for the UN General Assembly and NYC Climate Week, I’m beyond excited to share a report I've been working on for the past few months: Gen AI for the Global Goals, a groundbreaking study how Generative AI can impact sustainable development, from Accenture and United Nations Global Compact. Only 17% of the SDGs are on track – we need to take action now. #GenAI could be the radical innovation we need to accelerate progress on the SDGs and help the private sector accelerate sustainability efforts while delivering business value, if developed and deployed responsibly. We are in the early stages of Gen AI usage: 97% of executives believe that Gen AI will transform their industries over the next 3-5 years, driving a projected $200B of global investment by 2025. As this technology is adopted, it is imperative that sustainable development is embedded at the forefront. Our report explores the potential radical impact of Gen AI on sustainable development, grounding this vision in how companies are using Gen AI now to address everything from maternal health to supply chain efficiency. We also identify existing risks and capability gaps, and outline concrete steps businesses must take to ensure the effective and responsible use of this revolutionary technology. It was great seeing many of you at at NYC Climate Week and hear the buzz with health being an official theme for the first time this year. In the lead up to UNGA and NYC Climate Week, Accenture the United Nations Global Compact released "Gen AI for the Global Goals," a really interesting report looking at how private sector use of Gen AI has the potential to make or break the global Sustainable Development agenda. With only 17% of Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) on track, it is imperative for the private sector to take advantage of technologies like Gen AI to accelerate innovation and unlock the business transformations needed to accelerate progress. While recognizing the huge potential generative AI offers, the report also cautions against its risks. It provides a robust framework for companies to implement generative AI responsibly, emphasizing the importance of human oversight, ethical governance and the alignment of AI strategies with the Ten Principles of the UN Global Compact. This report includes case studies, insights from interviews with private-sector leaders and ready-to-use resources to help businesses use Gen AI to support people and the planet. 𝗞𝗲𝘆 𝗢𝘂𝘁𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗲𝘀: 𝗔𝗜 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗼𝗳 𝗜𝗻𝗱𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗲𝘀 The Industries in the Intelligent Age report series offers actionable insights for scaling AI responsibly in critical sectors like healthcare, manufacturing, and finance, driving smarter and more resilient systems. 𝗔𝗜 𝗥𝗲𝗴𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗖𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗮𝗯𝗼𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 Global leaders convened to address ethical deployment and governance gaps through the Blueprint for Intelligent Economies, a white paper outlining steps for inclusive AI adoption. The AI Competitiveness through Regional Collaboration Initiative was also introduced to foster long-term economic growth and international partnerships. 𝗙𝗿𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗲𝗿 𝗠𝗜𝗡𝗗𝗦 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗴𝗿𝗮𝗺𝗺𝗲 The debut of the Frontier MINDS programme spotlighted high-impact, scalable AI solutions to global challenges, including climate change and healthcare access, with its first cohort set to launch in 2025. 𝗗𝗶𝗴𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗦𝗮𝗳𝗲𝘁𝘆 & 𝗧𝗿𝘂𝘀𝘁 Efforts to enhance trust and security in the digital landscape emphasized the importance of responsible innovation and safeguarding digital ecosystems for a sustainable future. This year reaffirmed that AI is not merely a tool but a global imperative to address humanity’s most pressing challenges. Achieving its full potential will require bold, cross-sector collaborations to ensure its benefits are shared by all. I have been working on some Gen AI x Sustainability use cases for almost an year now. A lot of clients and colleagues often ask if using Gen AI for sustainability communication or value chain sustainability is counter-intuitive and does more harm than good. 👩💻 Our world today is driven by #DigitalTechnologies. We use them to stay connected to each other and to improve our standard of living. Amidst the rapid development of new technologies, it is crucial we leave no one behind.   ❕The implementation of the #GlobalGoals can be significantly accelerated with by digital technologies. However, in particular the resource-intensive development of AI poses a challenge to reaching our climate goals. If left unchecked, digital technologies can exacerbate existing inequalities. To build a safe, inclusive and sustainable #DigitalFuture for all, we must work together to decide on global values and guiding principles for the digital transformation and the AI revolution. 🇺🇳 This vision of an open, free, and secure digital future is the essence of the #GlobalDigitalCompact, which will be agreed upon by UN Member States and annexed to the Pact for the Future. The GDC is the first-ever global approach to outline value-based, worldwide guidelines for our digital future. It will cover a wide array of topics, amongst them human rights online, AI governance, internet governance, bridging global digital divides and accountability.   🇩🇪 As a co-facilitator of the Summit of the Future, Germany is an active supporter of the Global Digital Compact and of a strong role for the United Nations in the global governance of digital technologies.
