Yesterday we were delighted to participate in the Belgian EU Presidency Workshop: Securing Access to Radiopharmaceuticals for all European Patients during which Cristiana Gameiro was honored to present the innovative accelerators: pioneering technologies for advanced radioisotope production. This workshop featured very interesting presentations about radiopharmaceuticals' availability in Europe, regulatory framework and so inspiring patient testimonials treated by innovative radionuclide therapies. Your engagement means a lot to us.  For this week's Nuclear Facts Unveiled with AtomVie Global Radiopharma (AtomVie), we would like to tackle a common myth or concern in the patient population. Myth: Nuclear medicine procedures such as PET scans involving radioactive agents will accumulate in the patient's body    Fact: Fear not! Because the amount of radiotracer used in nuclear medicine scans is extremely small, the patient’s radiation exposure is small. Nuclear medicine specialists use the ALARA principle (As Low As Reasonably Achievable) to carefully select the amount of radiopharmaceutical that will provide an accurate test with the least amount of radiation exposure to the patient. The actual dosage is determined by the patient’s body weight, the reason for the study and the body part being imaged. The targeted nature of radiopharmaceuticals allows them to be delivered mostly to the organ of interest while maintaining a low whole body radiation exposure.
