It was great to see our Sustainability Lead, Michael Clarke’s contributions to a session on measuring environmental impact in the pharmaceutical industry at the Pharma Sustainability Integrates conference this week. Michael urged the industry to take time to understand why we are measuring impact and how we are going to use the information we generate. The life sciences sector accounts for 5% of global carbon emissions, according to this piece from McKinsey & Company in Sustainability Magazine by Jasmin Jessen: 50-70% of pharmaceutical manufacturers have set decarbonisation targets, but less than 20% have detailed implementation plans. These manufacturers are finding difficulties in a lack of transparency around viable solutions and limited visibility into product carbon footprints.

In the pharmaceutical industry, sustainability regulations are still catching up. As Agnieszka van Batavia, our Sustainability Manager, highlights in the latest CPHI Pharma Sustainability Trend Report, there are "hardly any legal requirements" governing sustainable practices in pharma packaging. This absence of regulation presents a unique opportunity—and responsibility—for industry leaders.
