I had an insightful few days at the annual Hosts and Federations Summit in Lausanne this week, connecting, collaborating and learning from a wide range of agencies, rights holders, and host cities 🌍 Amid a number of fascinating panel discussions, here are my top five takeaways from the Summit: 🌱 𝐒𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐢𝐬 𝐠𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐢𝐧 𝐠𝐫𝐨𝐰𝐭𝐡 𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐠𝐢𝐞𝐬 It’s very encouraging to see sustainability feature so strongly in the growth strategies of both federations and host cities for major sporting events. The trend is moving away from sustainability being an additional consideration in event delivery. However, there is still a long way to go in fully integrating sustainability into the core of event planning and delivery, especially in addressing the massive challenges of freight and logistics, construction, and spectator engagement. 🤝 𝐂𝐨𝐥𝐥𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐢𝐬 𝐤𝐞𝐲 There is a significant opportunity and need for collaboration between architecture, space design, and sustainability engagement strategies. This includes sustainability considerations in materials and the development of stadia and event spaces. 👥 𝐓𝐚𝐢𝐥𝐨𝐫𝐞𝐝 𝐬𝐩𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐨𝐫 𝐞𝐧𝐠𝐚𝐠𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 Engaging spectators on sustainability at sporting events should no longer take a 'one size fits all' approach. While headline messages and commitments are important, we must recognise the diverse range of audiences and tailor our engagement strategies accordingly. For example, engaging children requires different methods compared to young professionals or older adults. 🏆 𝐀𝐥𝐢𝐠𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐠𝐥𝐨𝐛𝐚𝐥 𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐚𝐫𝐝𝐬 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐝𝐞𝐥𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐲 There is a need for global events to align on what 'good looks like' in event delivery and build a consensus among host cities and sport federations. While local objectives may vary, there can be consistency in key measures of success in sustainability. 🏅 𝐊𝐚𝐛𝐚𝐝𝐝𝐢: 𝐀 𝐫𝐢𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐠𝐥𝐨𝐛𝐚𝐥 𝐬𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭 I also learned that Kabaddi is one of the fastest-growing sports coming out of South Asia. The emergence of professional leagues like the Pro Kabaddi League (PKL) in India has massively commercialised the sport and expanded its reach and popularity globally. So much so that the West Midlands will host the Kabaddi World Cup in 2025! Major Events International Ltd #HFS2024 #FHS2024 #majorevents

Zoom in and zoom out: Rhine-Ruhr 2025 FISU World University Games’ approach to #sustainability Major sporting events always have the potential to captivate large audiences. Not only can these events attract billions of viewers globally, but also tens or hundreds of thousands – if not millions – of in-person attendees. Multi-sport tournaments allow those watching to experience events they may not have even considered before. However the impact on the environment can be substantial. Over recent years, major event hosts have placed a greater emphasis on operating as sustainably as possible. Germany’s hosting of #UEFAEuro2024 has also paved the way for more sustainable major events. The Euros are perhaps useful signpost for the country’s staging of the Rhine-Ruhr 2025 FISU World University Games from July 11-27 next summer, which will feature thousands of student athletes across 18 different sports. In a bid to set a benchmark for the International University Sports Federation’s flagship event, the local organising committee recently published a pre-Games paper entitled ‘Zoom-in and Zoom-out: The Sustainability and Legacy Approach’. “Sustainability was already defined as a core conceptual element in the bid book, as was the focus on the SDGs,” Helen G., Rhine-Ruhr 2025 organising committee’s Senior Manager, Legacy and Sustainability, tells Global Sustainable Sport. Discover the 8th edition of EASE TALKS, the voice of European Sport Employers!🎙️🗣️ During the General Assembly, EASE members discussed on the international sport events organized in each European country. An « International sport event » has to bring together contestants from other countries, at the European or international level. To know more about the willingness of each country to host these events, EASE did not include in the study those which are held every year in the same country. 🌍 A quantitative database has been produced by EASE staff, to know how many sport events were organized in each European country between 2015 and 2024 – this period enables to take into account the countries’ willingness before and after the Covid-19 health crisis. The aim is to understand whether there have been any breakthroughs. For now, the database features 1.365 events from 40 different sports. Then, a Google Form has been sent to partners in all the 27 European countries, to know more about three questions : How many sport events has thecountry organized since 2015 ? Do the public authorities and the population support the organization of these international sport events ? What are the priorities given to these sport events by the country and the organizing committees ? 👷♂️ Responses to the questionnaires revealed a European culture of sport events, with little overall impact from the health crisis, and whose priorities are social impact, diplomacy and economic benefits. 🤝 Led by EASE staff and enriched by Piotr Poplawski, Managing Director of the Institute for Sport Governance (ISG, Poland) and Jan Skircka, IBU World Championship Bialthon 2024 venue manager (Czech Republic), the discussion enabled to think about the challenges and the issues faced by the organizers. A new cycle of studies will be launched in 2024-2025 based on the data collected.
