I am pleased to share that the paper "Understanding Supply Chain Orchestration Mechanisms to Achieve Sustainability-Oriented Innovation in the Textile and Fashion Industry" has been published in Sustainable Production and Consumption. The paper, links 2 streams of literature, that on Resource Orchestration (RO) theory and that on Sustainability-Oriented Innovation (SOI), through an in-depth field study in the fashion industry. This study identifies different types of SOIs (i) B2C collections (ii) B2B partnerships, (iii) Circular services, (iv) Social impact projects, and demonstrates how identifying and implementing SOIs requires different RO mechanisms. It also highlights a hierarchy between different types of SOI and posits that it is crucial to focus, at first, on economically viable SOIs. These will allow the accumulation of resources and competencies which, in turn, will enable triple-bottom-line outcomes to be pursued through other, not necessarily profitable, SOIs. The paper provides evidence of how superior orchestration capabilities, a very well-designed business model, and, most of all, a sincere commitment to making the fashion world more sustainable, have led a small sustainable fashion brand Made in Prato to scale -out, -up and -deep successfully and become a global success story (as evidenced by the recent mention in the Financial Times). Unfortunately, due to the journal's editorial policies, we were not permitted to disclose the name of the company that was the subject of our study, despite having authorization to do so. We used the pseudonym "Alpha" instead, but I am confident that anyone reading this post will recognize the company in question... I warmly thank my former student Claudia Ermini and my great colleague Albachiara Boffelli for their invaluable contribution to this paper. While working on a recent trend forecast project, I came across an article depicting the fascinating intersection between fashion and technology. Combining Style and Science: The New Frontier of Fashion describes how innovation is reshaping how we design, produce, and market clothing. What interested me specifically was how advances in the textile industry have opened doors for thermoregulation, insulation, and antibacterial resistance. "The new possibilities offered by scientific research are also influencing the work of designers in creating innovations that satisfy both aesthetic and functional aspects," Fulgar.com states. This versatility encourages performance enhancement in sportswear and the further development of "athleisure." Understanding this science-led trend is vital for marketing in the industry. Words like "science-based" and "evidence-backed" are not only instantly appealing to the consumer but will also drive better SEO results. The fusion of fashion and technology is shaping the future of the industry. Embracing this innovative trend will not only attract consumers but also improve web presence. Forecasting in both design and marketing requires tapping into this science-led movement. #fashion #technology #innovation #sciencebased #evidencebacked #trend #forecast

Just published in Sustainable Production and Consumption, our paper "Understanding Supply Chain Orchestration Mechanisms to Achieve Sustainability-Oriented Innovation in the Textile and Fashion Industry" shows how it is possible even for small enterprise to orchestrate a network of strategic suppliers to achieve specific aims contributing to a wider goal to achieve true sustainability. 👉 A challenging aim, that cannot be achieved alone (Read: importance of creating and orchestrating a supply network) and all at once (Read: importance of building it up in incremental initiatives, but without forgetting the wider picture)! I would like to thank my coauthors Filippo Visintin and Claudia Ermini for their dedication and efforts to develop this article, that we hope will make a relevant and radical contribution to research on supply chain sustainability and resource orchestration, also from the perspective of small players in the fashion industry (too often overlooked)! Happy to discuss it further if you find it interesting! It’s an honor to be so prominently spotlighted in The Interline's new Sustainability Report! Download your free copy for exclusive market analysis and insights into fashion’s most pressing sustainability challenges, and don’t miss the report’s coverage of TradeBeyond and its innovative ESG solutions on page 82. #ResponsibleFashion #Sustainability #Apparel #FashionTechnology
I don't think there are any challenges bigger in scope but less certain in shape than sustainability. The broad direction fashion needs to move in is clear - and it demands fundamental change on very fast calendar - but the specifics, and how they change year-over-year, are always changing. As are the potential solutions. Last year The Interline put its first stake in the ground with The Sustainability Report 2023. This year we're coming back to the same subject - supported by MUNICH FABRIC START - to see how much has changed, and to understand how the role of technology is evolving now that the industry appears to have a clearer idea of the expectations it's placing on software and process change. Alongside profiles and executive interviews with senior figures from Hyland, Lectra, Oritain, PTC, and TradeBeyond, The Sustainability Report 2024 features exclusive editorials from: Joanna Czutkowna FRSA, Roni GamZon, Aasia D'Vaz-Sterling, Sylvia Ng, Gemma A. Williams, Emma Feldner-Busztin, Dennis Nobelius, Darya Badiei Khorsand, Sophie Benson, and Sanne Schoenmaker. Oh, and I also wrote a context-setting introduction! Download your copy, free and ungated, today: https://lnkd.in/eX9PWVJT Our cover art this year is by Barney Ibbotson, and was designed to tell the story of the modern fashion supply chain. #sustainablefashion #fashiontechnology
