India finish Paris Olympics with 6 medals (pending outcome of Vinesh Phogat case)….Negatives: India won 6 medals in 2012, 12 years later nothing has changed with our best being 7 in 2021. No medals in Badminton, Boxing, Archery which have received a lot of support hurt our chances. Positives: Many more genuine medal contenders. If we had 10-12 in 2012, we have 16-18 in 2024, this number can go even higher in years to come. We were in medal contention in 14 events (if we include boxing QFs where a win secures a medal). That’s very positive. However taking that final step which differentiates a medal from 4th or 5th is dependant on multiple things, a lot of which lies outside the field of play. Overall: A dissapointing Olympics but somewhere the message needs to go that we need to create a more mature environment. Perhaps that will reflect better on the medal tally.
