IMHO, the short answer to the question is 𝗡𝗼. FinOps in its current state may not save public cloud from itself. Why? What is missing in FinOps? FOCUS (FinOps Open Cost and Utilisation Specification) is a great step forward in driving consistency and transparency in cloud utilisation and costs. But is it enough to have meaningful conversations on cloud economics? Such conversations require understanding not just how much cloud costs to the business, but also how cloud helps drive revenues and margins for the business. While unit economics helps understand cloud costs relative to business activity, the actual benefit to the business is still not clear. This in no way suggests that cloud cost optimisations are not necessary. In fact they are vital. But so is the realisation of the financial benefit cloud native transformation can bring. And such a transformation is not limited to technology but also requires optimising operating models and business processes. Without this, a focus on cloud costs, particularly unit costs, will continue to traumatise teams, limiting their ability to deliver value to the business. #finops #technology #cloud #strategy https://lnkd.in/g2Jm6BbX
