Unlocking Creativity There is nothing quite like the rehearsal space—a truly fabricated world where people meld in unison with their imagination, creating alternate universes. The magic of a rehearsal space often lies in its freedom and the room for creativity. One can step into this space, leaving everything behind, and feel safe to express their truest inner emotions and ideas. The power of such a space can be constructed anywhere and is not bound to the confines of a theatre. Creating rehearsal spaces in the office can elevate brainstorming to the next level. In order to maintain originality, it is essential to allow ourselves to play, to experiment, and to explore. It is in the happy accidents where the most wondrous ideas sometimes hide. This stunning choreography from the stage rehearsals of Bab(b)el at the Ballett Theater Trier in Germany is a prime example of artists, space, and objects coming together to form an entire world and language through movement. At one glance, it appears simple, yet the layers of storytelling and emotion behind it are deep and complex. An actress friend of mine wanted a new headshot, and whilst I almost always use my studio lighting for this type of shoot, the natural light at the time was so gorgeous, we shot some just using the natural light, and this was one of those, and the one she ended up choosing. A recent passion of mine is film photography. The process of loading, winding, focusing, adjusting shutter speed and aperture, and finally taking an exposure induces a meditative, trance-like state. Photography itself is a curious creative medium, as it is, at its core, a three-way interaction between photographer, subject, and viewer. When I am out taking photos, I find that time moves slower, my breathing becomes more controlled, and I become vividly aware of the space that surrounds me. It is almost a spiritual experience. I particularly like this photograph I took on my 1971 Canon FTb of a dancing street performer at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe earlier this year. As I continue to mature and develop, the importance of creative expression grows even more apparent. We are creative beings. Whether it is prose, poetry, photography, music, dance, cinema, fine arts, or any of the countless other creative mediums, art is key to how we make sense of the world around us. Art excludes no one; we all can engage in valid artistic expression, and we all possess the coveted ability to create. Nor do we necessarily need to be actively 'creating' in order to benefit from artistic expression. Engaging with art produced by others - through reading, listening to music, or attending a performance, for example - is equally good for the soul. The choice of specific #colors in character costumes and makeup, as well as in set designs, can define not only personalities and emotional states but also the mood of the story. In essence, applying #colorharmony to #cinema is a powerful tool: it tells a story without the need to really use words.
