We welcomed 2 volunteers from the CUMMINGS FOUNDATION. Katelyn Quynn & Ed Rocha visited to speak with Sue Keays & senior staff about how we are benefiting from Cummings’ most generous 10-year grant of $300K. In year 4 of the grant, we shared news of the founding of our first-in-the-nation Neurodevelopmental Unit & our Partial Hospitalization Program. After the visit, Katelyn said: “I was so impressed by the level of both compassion and professionalism/expertise that we saw yesterday. We are so fortunate to have you in our backyard!” Thank you #cummingsfoundation !

#Healthcare administrative bloat and inefficiency are rampant. While I have respect for many aspects of the VA healthcare system, I had not considered administrative efficiency to be one of them. This piece has me questioning my likely false assumptions and creates a different perspective. It represents a system that has the patient (a veteran) at the center of a team-based primary care network with a more holistic lens. VA hospitals outperform non-VA hospitals on 10 core patient satisfaction metrics in a recent Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems Star Ratings. In the private sector health care system, we often only addresses the patient’s chief complaint, focusing on the current illness or acute issue. Ensuring a patient’s well-being requires the integration of the physical, psychological, social, and economic aspects of health and a thorough understanding of how these factors impact treatment compliance which the VA does much better than the rest of US healthcare. For you pediatricians, internists, and family medicine docs/clinics out there-- Can we learn from the VA? #UsingWhatWeHaveBetter

I have been watching with keen interest all the LinkedIn posts from many ex-colleagues about the move-in process as the Midland Met Hospital opened its doors to staff, visitors and patients over the weekend. It seems like a remarkably well planned and managed transition, and I am really pleased for those involved. I also applaud Balfour Beatty plc for completing the project from the graveyard it once inhabited. Sadly however, such a well-run process should not overshadow or allow people to forget what came before, which was probably one of the worst public-private partnership procurements ever witnessed by the industry, where 2 of the 3 bidding consortia walked away leaving the Sandwell & West Birmingham NHS Trust to negotiate a contract with Carillion. Everyone thought that Carillion could not lose from this position. By the time financial close and start on site was occurring in January 2016, the cracks in the company were already there for all to see. Within 2 years the project was reported as being 17m pounds over the contract price Carillion negotiated and was significantly delayed, which contributed towards the liquidation of the parent company. Upon liquidation it was clear the facts were far worse than had been reported. Now we sit here the day after the NHS Trust has moved in and I reflect on the procurement meetings with the NHS Trust almost 10 years ago to the day. They chose arrogance over collaboration as the NHS Project Director and CEO at the time laughed off the private sector concerns (yes, I mean actually laughing at us). The result? A project that has taken 10 years to complete and a construction bill way in excess of one billion pounds. A somber lesson to show that dismissing private sector concerns can lead to a costly outcome and that the only way complex projects should be procured is through collaboration, not ignorance.
The Midland Met has opened its doors to our population. Chairman of the Trust Sir David Nicholson said of the historic moment: “It takes a village to raise a child, and for us a community to raise this hospital. "We are so proud of what everyone has done, and today as we treat our first patients in this building, it is testament to what can be achieved when we are all focussed on a single aim." 💙 Thank you to the Caring Foundation of Texas and Blue Cross Blue Shield of Texas for organizing an exceptional event this past Sunday. All proceeds from the event were directed towards funding life-saving preventive healthcare initiatives provided by CFT. I would also like to express my gratitude to my BCBSTX colleague and friend, Miss Lorrie Lacko, for inviting me to be a part of this meaningful occasion and for facilitating my involvement with this remarkable foundation. Numerous families throughout Texas encounter obstacles in accessing the preventive healthcare they require. These challenges often include financial constraints, transportation issues, and lack of time. Women and children are disproportionately affected by these barriers. The Caring Foundation of Texas addresses these challenges by collaborating with organizations, educational institutions, non-profits, and government entities to bring medical services directly into communities where they are needed most. This initiative enables many adults and children to obtain essential preventive care necessary for leading healthy, fulfilling lives. Preventive healthcare is vital for laying a strong health foundation for our children's futures. CFT passionately advocates for community service and strives to provide preventive healthcare resources across our regions. If you wish to support CFT’s efforts, please contact their headquarters in Richardson at: 🧡 Caring Foundation of Texas 💚 1001 E. Lookout Drive Richardson, TX 75082 (866) 806-SHOTS (7468) https://lnkd.in/gwdjF-7Q All services offered by the Texas Care Van program are free for those who qualify. Since its inception in 1997, over 1.4 million immunizations have been administered to more than 2.5 million individuals, along with over 450,000 dental services provided to children since 2008. 💙 #healthcare #texas

⚠️ Advances in #technology can make us take things for granted. ⚠️ ⛔️ I recently posted another instance that led to the death of a new mother. Another case of medication error from an automated dispensing cabinet (#ADC) was once more flagged. An #ER nurse pulled three 20g/100mL bags to match the order of 60g IV #Mannitol. Unfortunately, the labelling was not crossed checked, and she ended up pulling three infusion 100g/500mL bags instead. ⛔️ ‼️DO NOT CUT CORNERS! Check that the screen description matches the product in your hands! ‼️ More guidelines from the Institute for Safe Medication Practices (ISMP) here 👇👇👇👇👇👇👇👇👇👇 #Patientsafety

Did you know that May is NEC Awareness Month? In 2014, the Canvasser family founded the NEC Society after their son Micah tragically died from complications of the disease just before his 1st birthday. They chose May as #NECAwarenessMonth because of the importance of partnering with and elevating mothers to build a world without this devastating disease. Mothers are accelerating NEC research, education and advocacy while providing the most protective therapy against #NEC - their milk. The NEC Society's motto, "from pain to power", recognizes the profound heartache and trauma following a NEC diagnosis. While we cannot lessen or erase this pain, together we can harness the power of our heartache and channel our anguish to help other families while supporting The NEC Society's mission. Learn more below as we work to build a world without this devastating disease: #preventNEC #NECawareness #healthcareprofessionals

As part of our commitment to expand access to quality health care, Helmsley has granted $11.6 million to three health systems in Nevada, bringing life-saving #ECMO (extracorporeal membrane oxygenation) technology for patients in rural communities suffering from acute cardiac and pulmonary failure. The availability of ECMO provides timely medical support to those experiencing severe respiratory and cardiovascular distress who face additional challenges around physician shortages, lack of equipment, and geographic barriers to emergency treatment. The grants will go to Dignity Health-St. Rose Dominican Siena Hospital, Renown Health Foundation, and University Medical Center of Southern Nevada (UMC), funding physician and staff travel to active extracorporeal life support centers, training equipment, consultation services, and other tools for program expansion across the state. “ECMO can be a game changer for patients with severe heart and lung conditions,” said Walter Panzirer, a Helmsley Trustee. “Without ECMO, hospitals have to transfer patients to other facilities, and those who are too unstable for transport could die before receiving needed care.” Read more here: https://lnkd.in/dSBcE5Eb

Celebrating National Public Health Week: A Preventive Medicine Perspective As we step into National Public Health Week, I am reminded of the incredible journey we are on as a community dedicated to health and well-being. As a preventive medicine physician, I am particularly excited to celebrate the strides we are making in understanding and promoting preventive health measures. Preventive medicine is at the heart of public health. It is about being proactive rather than reactive. It is about understanding the nuances of disease prevention, health promotion, and the broad impact of environmental factors on our health. This week, we celebrate the tireless efforts of public health professionals who dedicate their lives to preventing disease, prolonging life, and promoting health through organized efforts and informed choices of society, organizations, public and private communities, and individuals. Here are a few thoughts I'd love to share with my network on this important week: Prevention is Power: Emphasizing preventive health measures can significantly reduce the burden of chronic diseases and mitigate future healthcare challenges. Let's continue to advocate for regular health screenings, vaccinations, healthy lifestyle choices, and other preventive measures that can save lives. Collaboration is Key: The interplay between various healthcare disciplines is crucial for effective preventive medicine. It requires a collaborative approach, integrating expertise from various health professionals to create a holistic and impactful public health strategy. Education and Empowerment: Informing and empowering individuals and communities to take charge of their health is fundamental. Let's use this week to spread awareness about the importance of preventive health and encourage people to actively participate in their health journey. *****Innovation and Research: Advancements in medical research and technology are pivotal in enhancing our preventive measures. Let's celebrate the innovations that have brought us forward and support continued research in preventive medicine. As we observe National Public Health Week, let's recommit to a future where preventive health is a priority for all, reducing the global burden of disease and improving quality of life. I encourage my peers, colleagues, and friends to join in this observance, sharing knowledge, experiences, and insights that can propel us toward a healthier tomorrow. #PublicHealthWeek #PreventiveMedicine #HealthForAll #CommunityHealth #ACPM #PublicHealth #UNC
