Today Julia Harding writes on Viúva Gomes bringing life back to the sands of Colares, Europe's most westerly vineyards. 'Planting a vineyard is a long-term venture. Or perhaps I should say adventure. A massive investment and no return for at least three years and possibly a lot longer, and, like all farming, even more precarious in a period of climate extremes and unpredictability. Nowhere more so than in Colares on the Atlantic coast of Portugal about 40 km (25 miles) north-west of Lisbon, shown on the World Atlas of Wine map of Lisbon and the Setúbal Peninsula. As Simon Woolf and Ryan Opaz point out in their book 'Foot Trodden: Portugal and the wines that time forgot', Cabo de Roca in the far south-west of the Colares wine region is the westernmost point of mainland Europe, and the windiest. As the photos below show, planting here requires traditional wisdom and skills, courage, a lot of hard work, and a bulldozer. Today the Colares vineyards, like those in parts of the Sierras de Málaga, compete with the real-estate demands of tourism.' https://lnkd.in/g5aVAiWD

Are you a connoisseur of gourmet adventures? Here's a selection of top vineyards to explore in 2024. 🍷 𝗕𝗼𝗿𝗱𝗲𝗮𝘂𝘅, 𝗙𝗿𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 The best time to visit Bordeaux is during the harvest season, which typically occurs from late September to early October. During this time, you can participate in grape picking. Spring and early summer are also great times to visit, offering pleasant weather and fewer crowds compared to the peak months. 𝗧𝘂𝘀𝗰𝗮𝗻𝘆, 𝗜𝘁𝗮𝗹𝘆 Tuscany is best visited in the late spring or early autumn when the weather is mild and the countryside is blooming in all the brightest colours. These seasons offer ideal conditions for exploring the vineyards and all the pretty little villages around. 𝗠𝗮𝗿𝗹𝗯𝗼𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵, 𝗡𝗲𝘄 𝗭𝗲𝗮𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗱 We recommend visiting Marlborough during the late summer to early autumn months, when the weather is warm and sunny, and the grape harvest is underway. This period is the absolute best for both outdoor activities and sampling the renowned Sauvignon Blanc wines. 𝗗𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗼 𝗩𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗲𝘆, 𝗣𝗼𝗿𝘁𝘂𝗴𝗮𝗹 Another option for your autumn getaway — Douro Valley, where you can tour the many famous historical wineries of Portugal. Wine vacations.... When we think about vineyards, the places that flashes in our minds are predominantly Western in nature - France, Italy, Spain ... Yet there are vineyards within Asia itself, with the more popular ones in China and India... Plus, we have a few surprises up the sleeve in places we didn't expect, for example : 1. Taunggyi, Shan State – Myanmar Located at an altitude of 1,200 metres, the land provides the ideal conditions for the craft of winemaking. Plus, the location of Shan State makes it part of South Himalayas with attractions nearby including the picturesque Inle Lake and the elaborate Kakku Pagodas. 2. Khao Yai – Thailand A landscape of mountains and green valleys, this region is also home to the Khao Yai National Park. Despite Thailand's tropical weather, the environment and temperature creates the perfect microclimate for growing high-quality grapes for winemaking. 3. Bali – Indonesia Now this is a place no longer foreign to its neighbours - famous for its various vacation friendly activities and also for oenophiles. You'll find wines from the hillside vineyard of Sanggalangit - while enjoying magnificient views from its observation decks! So next time if you're planning your vacation in these countries, include the vineyard tour in your itinerary as well! Photo by Tommaso Pecchioli on Unsplash

Marketing a destination isn't just rehashing the same old story. It's understanding the changing interests of travelers. And modernizing the message. Take Cape May, known as America's Original Seashore Resort and a Victorian Treasure. It is a message that has worked for decades. But is it one that is going to appeal to younger generations? Maybe, but I doubt it. The one constant in life is change, and travelers' appetites are changing. Case in Point: Did you know that the Cape May Peninsula is a federally-recognized wine appellation and one of only 4 American Viticultural Areas (AVAs) in the State of NJ? Until recently, I did not. However, that's actually a pretty amazing little fact that I can use to entice travelers who might be more interested in varietals, vintages, and botanical views vice Victorian architecture. As I am writing this, I am even thinking of a post-stay survey to see what guests enjoyed most, especially my new tenants, so I can get a leg up on next year's marketing messages. This one was a fun one to write and even more fun to try. If you ever find yourself On The Way To Cape May, be sure to sample arguably the best wine produced in NJ! If I am around, I'd love to share a toast with you! #OnthewaytoCapeMay #CapeMay #CapeMayNJ #wine #winecountry #cheers #vacationrentals #vacationhome #shorttermrentals

The oldest finds of wine production have been found along the east shores of the Black Sea and dates back 8 000 years. Since then the Egyptians, the Greek and the Romans have passed the gift of wine making further and further west in Europe, to present day. Nowadays, wine is produced indoors, and an indoor space can be seen as “a controlled environment” – separated from nature’s alterations and key for making success. However, producing wine inside puts firm requirements on the indoor climate. In our latest blog, our expert, Luca Zordan, Managing Director Swegon Italy, explains what an optimal indoor climate solution for a winery can look like. https://lnkd.in/di32BXy4 #feelgoodinside
