Giant Yokohama Gundam Robot Relocating to Osaka Expo 2025 - https://lnkd.in/gtn57USP A colossal Gundam robot will stand sentinel over the 2025 World Exposition in Osaka, recalling the iconic “Tower of the Sun” artwork that defined Expo ’70 over 50 years ago. Bandai Namco Holdings announced on June 26 that it will display a life-size model of the popular anime mecha at its pavilion, marking the first such giant Gundam exhibit in Japan’s Kansai region. The 16.72-meter tall, 49.1-ton Gundam statue will strike a dramatic pose outside the pavilion building, kneeling on its left knee with its right arm raised high as if gesturing toward space or the future. While impressive in scale, this Gundam will remain stationary, unlike the moving version previously displayed in Yokohama from 2020 to 2024. “We aim to make our pavilion a place to connect with people in the world through Gundam and think about the future together,” Bandai Namco said of its “Gundam Next Future Pavilion.” The company plans to announce further details about the pavilion’s contents at a later date. The Gundam model will be constructed largely from materials repurposed from the Yokohama attraction, aligning with sustainability goals. It will be on display for the entire duration of the Expo, from April 13 to October 13, 2025. This announcement follows months of speculation after Gundam Factory Yokohama closed in March 2024. Fans had hoped the popular moving Gundam might find a new home at the Osaka Expo, and while the robot will indeed make an appearance, it will be in a modified, static form. The Gundam franchise, which debuted in 1979, has become a cultural phenomenon in Japan and beyond. Its enduring popularity stems from its blend of science fiction, mecha combat, and human drama. The presence of this towering robot at a world exposition demonstrates Japan’s commitment to showcasing its technological prowess and pop culture influence on a global stage. As the Expo approaches, the Gundam statue is poised to become a major attraction, drawing fans and curious onlookers alike.
