🎙️ I recently had the pleasure of joining my friend Christopher Detzel from Reltio on his DataDriven Conference podcast. We delved into the world of data management strategies to discuss the nuances of offensive and defensive approaches. To get the full picture of our discussion, be sure to listen to the recording here: https://lnkd.in/eVbzS-rj. Below, a few of the key points we covered.
⚔️ Understanding the distinction between offensive and defensive #data strategies is crucial. An offensive data strategy aims at positive outcomes like growth, innovation, and gaining a competitive edge, heavily relying on AI, analytics, and business engagement. On the flip side, a defensive strategy concentrates on preventing negative events, emphasizing data security, privacy, compliance, and risk management, involving heavier sponsorship and input from legal, compliance, and regulatory teams.
⚖️ Recognizing these two approaches is vital because any #strategy is fundamentally about making choices. There are trade-offs; being too offensive can expose you to risks such as data breaches, while being overly defensive can limit your innovative capabilities. The key is to strike a balance, and about making informed decisions, ensuring you uphold regulatory and security standards while innovatively using data where needed. There are areas where offensive and defensive strategies overlap, especially through a set of no-regret foundational capabilities that aid objectives on both fronts.
🌐 As concepts like data unification, 360 views, and #MDM are important in Reltio’s perspective on data strategies, we also discussed the links between such concepts and offensive and defensive data strategies. These solutions or capabilities all involve collecting data from a variety of sources, putting in place controls and governance, enriching the data, and then making it available for distribution. They are prime examples of integrating strict quality, classification, and access controls while at the same time driving the optimal democratization of this data.
