📊🌍 There's still time to apply to the Global Cardiovascular Research Funders Forum (GCRFF)'s 𝗗𝗮𝘁𝗮 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗴𝗲, applications to which close on 𝗠𝗼𝗻𝗱𝗮𝘆 𝟭𝟬 𝗝𝘂𝗻𝗲. 👨🔬👩🔬 The Challenge aims to check how much benefit we get from investing in cardiovascular and stroke research, and to find areas where more research funding is needed. ❓ Participants will be asked to use AI and data analysis to understand what has been successful, what has not, and to identify any gaps in cardiovascular and stroke research programmes. Learning through observation Some discoveries have a lasting impact on the way we see the world. National Science Day is celebrated on February 28 to honor the discovery of the Raman effect, which is known to have revolutionized our understanding of light-matter interactions and continues to find wide-ranging applications, including the identification of unknown substances and studying biological samples. Some of the most joyous moments during my scientific learning journey have been through observations, most memorably, glancing at beating heart muscle cells (cardiomyocytes) and C. elegans under the microscope. Aside from family and work, given the limited time, we’ve (team tagged below) put together a review highlighting the 'critical' importance of cellular morphology while designing disease models to better understand cardiovascular diseases. Younger me was terrified of submitting a paper to any journal - thoughts of rejection and failure were dominant; it felt like being back at school handing in an exam, and the teacher corrected it with a red pen - no feedback, no learning curve. Publishing is different; it is a communication channel with your peers, the Editor, and you to lift up your work. For those whose interest has peaked about "Scientific Sleuths," a good source to follow is The Retraction Watch. They keep a leaderboard running of who has the most retractions - 31 researchers are listed. When I search their database using Affiliations, here are the number of retractions per institution for 6 leading medical centers: 1. Brigham and Women's Hospital - 134 Retractions 2.
