Din l-Art Ħelwa would like to reassure its followers that it has – and always will – act with the utmost integrity in line with its mission. Its wide remit means that conflicts of interest may arise, but in such cases, Din l-Art Ħelwa committee members recuse themselves to ensure that a lively discussion can ensue, allowing Din l-Art Ħelwa to take a position that those within its decision-making body can feel comfortable with. We would therefore like to set the record straight as regards Prof. Alex Torpiano with reference to his involvement with the application for development permission related to the British Barracks at Fort Chambray, Gozo, which Din l-Art Ħelwa is opposed to. Prof. Torpiano has consistently demonstrated unwavering integrity throughout his career and within his role on our council. He has always adhered to ethical practices, openly declaring his interests and ensuring that any potential conflicts are transparently managed. It is unfortunate that recent factually incorrect allegations against Prof. Torpiano not only misrepresent his actions but also undermine the dedication he has shown in advocating for responsible heritage management and sustainable development. Prof. Torpiano has never attempted to influence the proceedings of Din l-Art Ħelwa regarding the development proposals at Fort Chambray. So much so that Din l-Art Ħelwa has been a consistent, vociferous and vehement objector to the proposed developments within the fort. We stand firmly by Prof. Torpiano, whose reputation and dedication to our cause remains untarnished.

I'm not a member of the AIG, but their letter today is fine, if it does ignore the fact that by and large no one really vets candidates for NGO boards and professional society boards via public processes that occur beyond the publication of the nominee's curriculum vitae etc. Should professional societies expect a more political process of vetting candidates, or should they expect an old, staid, and narrow profession-centric assessment of nominees by members? It seems odd that when nominees express political opinions about science, that they should not be held accountable via a political process when the profession washes its hands of holding them accountable for speaking beyond their remit as professionals. This issue, it seems, is beyond the capacity of the current processes to handle.

Earlier today, the Staff of the #IESBA released an update to its Questions and Answers (Q&As) publication, originally published in March 2023, on the IESBA revisions to the definitions of listed entity and public interest entity (PIE) in the IESBA Code of Ethics. This update includes a new Q&A to address the scenario where a jurisdiction has no PIE definition or excluded one or more of the mandatory categories in the IESBA PIE definition. As a Certified Economic Developer (CEcD) with Emeritus Status, The International Economic Development Council (IEDC) hasbappointed to serve on the Membership Engagement Advisory Committee (MEAC). This committee focuses on membership engagement and enhancement including the mentoring and cultivating of new professionals and emerging leaders in the economic development profession. It reviews approaches to reach out and communicate to non-members the value of membership in IEDC including reviewing membership programs from other organizations and reviewing the Membership Survey for ideas for the provision of new cost-effective member services. This Advisory Committee reports to the Stakeholder Engagement Standing Committee. The Membership Engagement Advisory Committee meets virtually throughout the year and in person at the Annual Conference. The Committee may develop subcommittees and task forces with approval by the SESC.

I have shared the methods and strategies with the participants of the second session of Online Class held on Wednesday, July 24, 2024. This time the topic we discussed was related to the preparation of Performance Indicators, Strategic Goals, Programs, and Activities of the Strategic Plan of K/L/PD’s (Ministry/Institution/Regional Apparatus). Again and again the enthusiasm of the participants made today's discussion very active because it was not only theory that we discussed but case examples of problems from several participants that made this discussion lively. We even discussed the draft Renstra that each participant had prepared. I would like to thank all participants who have fully participated in the online class activities on the first day to the second day, I hope that the insights that have been conveyed can help friends in optimizing the preparation of the Renstra of their respective Ministry/Institution/Regional Apparatus.
