When ITHAKA asked me about recording something for The World Day of Social Justice, I didn't think I had much to offer. There is real suffering happening in the world right now, and I am not marching in the streets or drafting petitions. Sarah Stevens asked some pointed questions, and the more we chatted, I realized that wherever we are, we CAN make a difference, even if it's just a small one.
Anyone who has heard my own JSTOR story knows that as a Bard Prison Initiative student, I became obsessed with Oscar Wilde *sigh*. But what if I told you an incarcerated learner used primary sources in JSTOR to create a care program for aging women in the prison she was in? A man in Arizona used JSTOR to understand trauma, and now he asks people, "How are you feeling?" instead of "Wassup?" He wants to build a trauma-centered support group from what he discovered in the archives. Oscar got me through a tough time, but other people in prison did waaaaay more with JSTOR than I had even dreamed of.
Finally, the people at ITHAKA care about equity. In 2019, while I was still incarcerated and spelling JSTOR with an "e,"our President, Kevin Guthrie, went on record about his concerns regarding higher education in prison. Before it was trendy. He SAW us. The people at ITHAKA care about social justice and lend their time and talent at work and beyond for issues they care about. There aren't enough characters to name every person who makes JSTOR Access in Prison possible.
We don't have to march in the streets or change laws to make the world a bit better. For the Wold Day of Social Justice, taking the time to see someone, and recognize their humanity is a win. That might be enough.🧡
