And then, when I returned from sabbatical, I took stock of what was needed at the level of infrastructure, at the level of talent, and at the level of platforms. So when I got an opportunity with Medicines for Malaria Venture (MMV) … they are based in Geneva. They are what we call a product development partnership, or a virtual research and development organization. Good oral health is important in dogs for their overall health and quality of life. Periodontitis, (gum disease), is often diagnosed at a late stage when it can be more difficult to manage. I’m delighted to share the latest from a series of research studies into canine periodontal disease by our team @Waltham Petcare Science Institute. Researchers have identified that qPCR (quantitative polymerase chain reaction) - a molecular screening technique - can be used for the early detection of bacterial species specifically associated with canine periodontitis, with an accuracy of 80%. This highlights the opportunity for advancing screening techniques that could support early disease detection, improving oral health of dogs, and consequently, better long-term health outcomes.
